I was just wondering if sticks are really that much faster on the highway than the autos are. If the auto trans kicks down isnt that the same thing as downshifting? I remember i got pulled on the highway in my old z28 by a lexus 1s the new little one the kid had a 13 psi intercooler and some other stuff i think i got sprayed on to but im not sure that was one fast butt lexus. and my camaro was no slouch it went 12.4 on street tires it was a auto though and i beat him when we raced iff the line but he was dam close and he did beat me on the highway run so whats up with that ??
ps i think this board is great bunch of cool guys with cool cars U DA MEN!!!
Only down low and only really, really high does the A4 have the gearing advantage with the 3.15 gears. Put a 3.42 gear in an A4 and it should be pretty even steven, the whole way.
The reasons were stated above, but just look at stock-to-stock dyno numbers to see the losses. A4 cars run about 290 rwhp, MN6's run around 305. These are both give or take a few ponies, but are based upon runs I've seen on same year cars, the same day on the same dyno.
On a roll with a stock converter you will have your hands full.I've never had a problem in any gear with a M6 or M5 ricer from any speed.Granted the 3.42's and the Pro Torque didn't hurt but the Transgo shift kit really helps with those lightning quick shifts

Re: m6 vs a4 highway roll??? (vstella)
M6 rules when I race guys with auto's you bait them to a speed where there tranny doesn't shift down and you can grab even 5 mph before shifting there dust.
Assuming stock for stock, a MN6 will beat an A4 in a highway rollon. When I had a '99 frc, I did third gear rollons from around 70 mph with a number of A4s and I pulled away pretty fast. I think the less drive train loss and gearing make a huge difference.
Another issue is the stock A4 performance characteristics. 70 mph is about the speed where an A4 has trouble making up it's mind if it wants to downshift to second or third (huge difference) if you go WOT. 30-35 mph is another spot where the transmission can't decide if it wants first or second (again, huge difference)on a downshift when applying WOT. These are both base roll-on speeds. It's why I bought a Hypertech. I have eliminated that issue from my car with it. I now always know that if I hit it between 30-35mph the car will always drop down to first, and between 70-75mph the car will always drop down to second. Much more enjoyable than making sure I'm just under 30 or just under 70 mph to ensure a full dropdown.

I'm not at all familiar with the operation of the A4, but, could this situation be remedied buy manually selecting your gear instead of letting the A4 decide?

It probably could, but then you stand the chance of hitting the rev limiter or not shifting at the optimum point. With the Hypertech you can adjust the WOT shift points exactly where you want them, time-after-time, adjust the rev limiter exactly where you want it and also adjust shift firmness which causes a quicker shift by applying more lockup pressure to the clutch packs. Each to their own, of course, but this car is super in heavy traffic and is still a gas to drive on the open road with the enhanced shifting.

I also would say MN6 is faster.
But that´s when all works perfect on shifting (MN6) and stock-stock.
It´s easier to only push the foot to the floor- so all should work out perfect to be faster in the MN6.
When a TC is installed and 3.42, then there´s no real difference.
And I have tested it with a lock up switch.........A4 are fast then!!!
