H/C/I here and was thinking of removing the muffler and tailpipe portion of the catback system and just sticking with the portion of the piping that goes over the axle. What do you all think? more power and torque or would it lose power and torque??

So, your planning to run without muffler? Are you going to extend the pipes out the back or just leave them open? I doubt you would see any real power change but it might sound faster...
If you are going to change anything think about adding an X pipe and leave the rest alone.
I'm a big believer in the "it's your car, do as you want" line of thinking but since you asked.......... I'd go with a quality cat back system. I think they give a much better sounding exhaust note than straight pipes. No appreciable power gain either way.

Just leave them open. I already have an xpipe. Was seeing if I could squeeze out some extra hp/tq by taking off the muffler/tailpipe portion. I know I'd be losing over 30lbs from the removal of the muffler/tailpipe section also.

I am thinking of doing something very similar to what you want to do...if/when you do the mod, could you post a video? I would like to hear what it sounds like

Leaving them open will most likely net you less power. For the x-pipe to improve exhaust scavenge there needs to be a length of pipe after the X intersection. I’m sure there is a formula for calculating the optimum length. Someone else on the forum might be able to quote it, but I don’t know it is off the top of my head. I would expect engine volume, engine rpm range, exhaust pipe size and other factors to be part of the calculation.
In place of or along with the calculated length you could take the experimental approach and install very long pipes, dyno the car and cut some off the pipe and retest to you find the best length.
