The 01 ring problem did not cause low compression. If you read the document posted above you see that GM just replaced one of the rings and did not hone the cylinder when doing the replacement.

The 01 problem only occurred with certain drivers. A car that had an oil consumption problem with one driver may not have had it with a subsequent driver who did not buzz (run over 3500 rpm) the engine under light loads.

Default Blame the infamous '01 LS6......

Bill you are very correct that the driver's style ( aggressive) with sustained high engine speed and low MAP was a big contributor to increased oil blow-by. I tell guys just to shift up another gear.

Fact is that GMPT engineers will tell you that going to a higher tension oil ring and Napier profile 2nd ring solves the oil consumption convincingly. Will the change also result in oil consumption decreases in the LS1 and LS6es which are driven normally or driven aggressively , but not in the high engine speed / low MAP manner that causes ring flutter? There is that possibility!!!

I get miffed ( miffed?), annoyed that the '01 LS6 getting the brunt of the blame as "the" oil burner, when in fact the issue actually goes back several years ( as the TSB indicates). I want all to know that because of the fact that '01 LS6 operates at higher rpms and has a manual transmission and that the stereo type Z06 owner is more aggressive with his /her driving style , it was these factors that made it possible for the GMPT engineers to pin down a couple factors for the oil consumption and come up with a band-aid fix.

i was wondering that earlier...is the updated ring set that gm is sending does it have a napier 2nd ring? and the expander a higher tension?...i've been using the perfect circle line at work and they have a napier 2nd and they work flawlessly...i agree most consupion issues are prob driver related and 01 just get a bad rep (satisfied 01 owner)

Here's the deal, the '01 LS6 ( I'll use the LS6 as an example) OEM #2 compression ring has/had a Napier scraper face but is less aggressive than the revised ( warranty) #2 replacement super Napier scraper faced ring.

Correct , the oil control ring has increased from 9 to 13 lbs tension.

Default acceptable quanity of oil consumption.......

Totally agree with high engine speed at low loads or the stereo type Z06 driving style contributed to the oil consumption issue as GMPT found in their questioning of complaining customers.

But what is an acceptable amount of oil consumption for a Vette. Now I have never with any of my many Vettes had to add oil between 3000 mile oil/filter service. So when GMPT engineers take a complaint car that uses one quart per 500-800 miles and then a more conservative drivers of the same car can achieve 1500-2000 miles before that one quart of oil is lost, that is significant But one quart of oil1500-2000 miles is not acceptable to me.

Yes , all my C5es use oil to some degree ( more like 4-oz in 3000 miles, I'll live with that . But I have modified and altered the blow-by so that it does not pass thru the combustion chamber. Any significant oil passing thru the combustion chamber is bad news in many aspects.
