Default Donaldson BlackWing Observations

Installed today! Very impressed with the build of this product. Overall easy to install. Even though there are a number of very good instruction threads complete with pictures, I thought I would add a couple of points that gave me a few hesitation moments. I am sure many of you had no problems but if I could save a couple of minutes for us neophytes . . .

On my 2001, there is wired connection that needs to be disconnected. It is the 5 wire connector to the MAF. Removing the little gray key is necessary before the connector will let go. I flipped up a little black catch and pulled out the key. The connector is then squezzed top and bottom and out it comes. I lost time on both the key removal and figuring out how the connector then let go.

The only scraped knuckles occurred while trying to get the original air box out. After loosening the bellows around the throttle body and popping the bridge off the two pins on top of the shroud, I struggled to get the bottom two pins to let go of the air box. Dummy me saw most instructions say go up and back and I translated that to mean mostly up. I guess I thought that the lower two pins were on the shroud which of course I now know is wrong. I pulled the original air box, bridge, and MAF out in pieces and then saw that the lower two pins are on the brace in front of the air box. I could have also gotten a clue if I had looked at the BlackWing itself and where the mounting holes were. Oh well - don't fit - get a bigger hammer! Now I know that to release those gromments the force needs to be applied more rearward.

Best news - car feels and sounds a little better already.

I needed to remove the MAF plug due to some underhood painting and found a small tab that will release the entire plug without having to remove the gray plastic piece.

Can you feel the difference in performance? I'm thinking of changing mine from the Z-06 K/N fiilter. I'm just hoping that there is some increase in performance with the Blackwing.
