How much fuel does it take to fill the tank after the car "dies"?

With the tanks almost empty, add TWO cans of Seafoam, or go ahead and buy a gallon for about $45 and add a quart of Seafoam to the almost empty tanks. Fill completely. You may need to do this a couple of times. If the problem doesn't improve, the level sensor/sender unit needs to be replaced.

And, filling the tank and driving it a bunch to empty the tank isn't as good as loading up with Seafoam and letting the tank sit full to have the cleaning agent in contact with the fouled sensor.

the fuel pump is in the gas tnak and is cooled by the gasoline. depending on the year, the fuel filer is also located in the gas tank.

I suspect your have a fuel pump/fuel filter issue.
