How hard of a job is it to replace the power steering pump
on the C5? I am somewhat mechanically inclined and was wondering if there are any good write up's on the forum etc? I'm sure some stealership will charge a good $300 in labor, and I'd like to do it myself...
Thanks guys!
Not a hard job. Depending on the year. Some pullies have holes in them to pull the pump without removing the pully. You will need that nifty pully puller to remove it and reinstall it, and if you have the right one you can remove the pully with the pump in the car. Remove the fluid tank first. Then disconnect the lines to the rack. Plug the lines and try not to loose too much fluid out of them. Pull the pump. Four bolts and a bracket. Go through the pump prime procedeure when you get it back in one piece. Make sure you get all the air out.
I have mine out right now.

Reason: mistake three boults should have been four bolts
its not hard. you'll just need a pulley remover and installer.
if you plan on doing heads in the future, would be a good idea to replace the pulley with one that isn't solid like the stock one, so you wont have to remove the pulley again to get to bolts.

The stock GM C6 pulley has holes, is metal, is a direct replacement (use your same belt) and is cheap.
I chose to stay with my stock no holes pully.
1. It has to be pulled anyway, It is not that hard with the pump mounted in the car, probably easier as I didn't have the pump dancing around or lock it in a vice to remove the pully.
2. It is probqably lighter than the metal one. (how much?) Mine was in good shape.
3. I didn't have to spend any money on a new pully after investing in a new pump and fluids. Must admit I did look at that polished alloy one with the spokes, but $99.00 for something I didn't need?
I'm fairly certain I'll be replacing my P/S pump soon also. No leaking but very hard to turn steering wheel. Fluid level is fine also. 93,000 miles, so I'm gonna assume the pump is shot.
The pully on my 2001 has no holes also. I can't see how it's gonna come out of that spot it's in. Does the alternator have to come off? How bout the Anti-lock brake modulator unit that is directly in front of and below the pump? I don't see how you can get the puller tool in there to do its job either. I have the service manual, but it's not very helpful. Where's the best place to get a new pump and also the pulley tool?
Any answered questions would be appreciated.
Hum, No You don't have to pull the alternator. I think that is the active handling valves directly in front and below the pump, mine does not have that option (early 98). If the box is below the center of the pully, you should be able to get the puller in there. I had no trouble with mine. I got my pump through Ecklers, They were the only place I could find one that was not painted black, not sure if it is a rebuilt or not and the price was right. I got my puller through Car Quest, it is a kit and the puller is fairly short. I bought the puller a few years ago and as I remember it was fairly expensive.
On my 99 FRC the PS pump was ridiculous. Really. Two days hard. But I had a vortech supercharger in the way. It made the car but even changing the drive belt is crazy.
