there is an extremely annoying whine when I accelerate my car. I can have it in neutral rev it up and no noise, only when in gear and with foot on the gas any ideas?

I hope someone chimes in. This is sounds kinda interesting. Could be the power steering pump check fluid level. might be in the trans maybe throughout bearing going out idk.

Seriously, how can anyone (sight unseen) possibly diagnose this issue, if you can at least be more specific as to the location of the noise.

Does it do it in every gear? Front or rear of the car? Only when accelerating or when at a cruise too?

I'm not the expert but if you were under load and the whine is present, try feathering the clutch just a little and see if the sound changes. Just trying to isolate clutch from the transmission. This type of whine that you are describing sounds like what would come from the differential, but sure wouldn't sound like it was up near the engine. Have you actually checked your transmission and seperately checked the differential fluid levels?

Sounds like gear whine to me. I started noticing a little bit of gear whine at one point, so I switched to a new differential fluid and now it's gone. If you're lucky, it might be as simple as that. Next time you're driving, turn off the radio, and try to isolate which end of the car the noise is coming from. If it's coming from the rear, I'd bet a lot of money it's your differential gears. I know a few guys with C5's that have had this problem, and all of them seem to notice it most in 3rd and 4th gear.
