I just purchased a 2003 convertible. Car had 8000 miles. The back-up lights do not work. Now, the person I bought this off of had replaced all the seals as these were leaking due to the car sitting for so long and the seals drying out.
Now, the back-up lights DO come on when I remote un-lock the car. But, when I shift (manual shift) into reverse, no back-up lights.
I'm thinking the back-up light switch may have gotten jostled around when the seals got changed. Or is this related to a fuse perhaps?
There's nothing in your question or profile stating the transmission type, but if it's a manual, they probably left the plug off the switch in the transmission. Or the switch could be bad. It unscrews and has one plug going to it. If it is connected, and the lights don't work, disconnect it and short across the two wires in the wire side of the plug with the ignition switch on. If the lights come on, the b/u switch should be replaced. It takes longer to jack the car up than to test and replace the switch. Be sure to check fuse 21 in the passenger foot well before you jack up the car. It feeds the voltage to the backup switch with the key on. The approach lights get their power from a different source, always hot.
