I have read many threads here about piston slap or valve train noise. I believe that my car has piston slap. The noise is loud and embarrassing. Sounds like a rod knock until it warms up, maybe 2-3 minutes. When you accelerate the noise smooths out. If in fact this is piston slap, what is long term damage going to be and is there anything that can be done to fix it?
How about more information, like how may miles on the LS1? Is the LS1 in a Vette? What year?
You could replace the pistons if the noise is more than you can bear.
The LS1 is in a 2000 Corvette with 77k miles. If I replace the pistons, is there an aftermarket that will not make this noise and do I need to do something with the cylinder walls?

Yes, the bores would need work to ready for new piston and rings. Fact of the matter, you would be better off buying a new short block and building from there. In some cases cost and time would even be better to buy a crate engine and install it.
A number of folks on here have upgraded to crate engines ranging from stock to LS3, and some even to the LS7. This is my plan once the LS1 gets tired.
As far as the noise hurting anything, not really, it just is a nasty sound. It is the down side of having short skirt pistons.
