Default Need Advice. . .

Started my car up the other day and the Check Gauge light came with the message Low Oil Pressure displayed on the DIC. I looked at the oil pressure gauge and it was pointing at zero. I ran the car for about 30 seconds and continued to shut it off/start it up to see if it would get pressure. However now the engine has a ticking sounds and sounds very rough. I had a friend come by and look at it and he thinks I need to buy a new short block.

My question is should I buy a new/used short block or just have it rebuilt ( new bearings , rigs & pump, and have it machined shot peened bore & honed)?

It could be the oil pump that went bad as well.

thanks

Dan

OK, I think I know why no responses thus far. Maybe they're wondering why you would continue to run the engine and attempt restarts with no oil pressue? Especially after ticking and rough sounds? My advice for next time would be to turn the engine off immediately and check your oil level at the dip stick. Perhaps bending down and inspecting the ground beneath your engine would also be appropriate under these circumstances.

I did check the oil level and underneath the car and found a full oil level and no leaks. I didn't run the car longer than 3-5seconds each start as I thought something was wrong with the gauge. Lets stick to my question and not question things that can't be fixed.

I would try replacing the oil filter then try starting it again---Just briefly though----I have recently had problems with fram filters pluigging up and having only 5-10 lbs of pressure-
If you are sure you need a new engine--I would buy a complete engine--There are now many companies that sell complete LS engines--Even GM---best is that you get a warranty with any of the crate motors

Crate engine would be my first suggestion. How about a little more info on your current engine. How many miles on it, any recent work on it? If yes, what? How did your friend deside that you needed a short block?

Sorry to hear your issues and hope you get the answers you need.

Was the ticking there before this happened or only after it happened? How was the car running right before? Any mods to the engine? As requested, how many miles? Was it tracked? First thought was the same already mentioned that the oil filter may have a problem. Oil pressure sender is a usual high failure item however it would not result in ticking, knocking or otherwise. Pull your codes please. There is a possibility that the oil pump could have failed but that wouldn't mean a whole engine replacement, unless there are other reasons associated with this.

I must have missed that additional info above in your first post.
