Default Help with new clutch noise?

Ok I'll describe as best I can. '99 FRC 6M trans. I noticed tonight when I let the clutch pedal out out all the way while in neutral there is a new noise coming from somewhere. When I push the pedal back down it goes away. I put it in 1st and let the clutch out slowly and no noise as it engaged and began to roll forward.

Wondering could this be the pilot bearing or throwout bearing going bad? If so is this a difficult or costly repair?

I some general mechanic experience and I've worked on truck and tractor engines and clutches but admit I have no experience working on the Vette drivetrain. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What I have learned so far: bad pilot bearing usually makes noise when downshifting or engaging. If there is a variance in where clutch engages, that is mc or hydraulics. When in neutral with clutch out, drivetrain is turning, so that is a big clue that if might be tt bushing or tranny related. Hope this helps.

If you lightly press the clutch pedal will the noise go away? My jeep did that after i put in a new clutch (didnt set it right).. maybe somehow the throwout bearing coming into contact with the steel fingers (or whatever there called) on the clutch assembly?

Im interested to see what it could be

The throwout bearing is in contact with the clutch "fingers" all the time-it is preloaded by the large spring on the slave cylinder,so chances are,if it were the throwout bearing making noise,it would do it all the time with a possible change in pitch when the pedal is depressed.
I agree with waddisme that it is most likely a torque tube bushing or tranny related noise, although the throwout bearing assembly is capable of making fairly loud rattling noises, usually when shutting the engine off with your foot off the pedal and the car in neutral(in fact this is normal)

You can pull the inspection cover on the bottom of the bellhousing to have a look, but accessing anything clutch/torque tube/tranny related for repair involves dropping the drivetrain.

There are a few good links in this thread:

check them out to see what's involved.

I just did a clutch on my 98 about a month ago,it's a fair amount of work, but if you've got the time and some patience,it's definitely do-able

Is this a new noise that was not there before? Remember that all Corvettes will make some noise while in neutral clutch out. I believe the owner’s manual points this out, especially if shutdown with it being in neutral and clutch out. As long as you don't have more than the normal launch rattle that most Corvettes make, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Thanks for the input. I'm not sure if it was there before or not. My son is the one that pointed it out while I sitting in the driveway. I don't "feel" anything different and it doesn't sound like something is loose or like what you'd hear from a bad wheel bearing. I know those sounds. And yes it goes away as soon as you press the clutch pedal in a little bit. And I don't hear anything out of the ordinary when downshifting or during acceleration. I haven't tired listening during shutoff in neutral. I'll do that tonight. Hopefully it's just a "Vette personality" kinda thing. I don't mine those. It's worth it for everything else I get from this car.

Just wanted to point out GM recommends shutdown with the clutch pushed down. The noise you will hear is the resonate point of the propshaft on the flex couplers. The normal launch noise sounds anything from a light rattle to a hissy type noise. Some of the newer cars (not vettes) have dual mass flywheels to redues the noise at launch.

I agree with your thoughts on "everything else I get from this car"!
