Default unknown cam question

i picked my car up with a cam in it, all i know is that its a MTI cam. i dont know if its a custom cam or one of their shelf cams, i tried pming him on here but i have no answer back

there is a real slight tick sometimes, so this winter i plan on pulling a valve cover and seeing if it has stock springs.

can i use an indicator and measure how much a rocker moves to find out the lift of the cam?

You can measure the lift but a cam is defined by LIFT AND DURATION, that's where a degree wheel comes in handy. Trying to measure duration in the car might be tough.

And max rpm I think. You can change lift with different ratio rockers too. What are you trying to do, determine what cam you have or what?

im just trying to make sure im not going to break a spring and drop a valve.

stock springs are prone to breaking as is, adding a cam is asking for it.

Just get some Patriot dual gold extremes, good for .660" lift. If you want to set your springs up properly, you need to shim them to achieve max spring pressure.

This is a good book, you can read about ls1 valve spring online:

You need a dial indicator and a cam wheel. Oh, and you have to remove the all the front accessories, including the crank pulley to get the duration.

lol, so am i correct about valve springs on these cars being prone to breaking? i read that on here, but maybe thats just the ls6.

looking down the oil fill hole, i can see the rocker. it cast, so im assuming thats stock.

also, looking online for a new gasket i see they are rubber. so im assuming they are reusable? the passenger side has a slight leak

They're investment cast steel. They're actually pretty nice units.

hatewhatownsyou:
If you have a degree wheel, a dial indicator and some time, you can recreate the cam card for your cam. If you don't feel like that, you might be able to score a cam number engraved into the end of the cam. But you'll still have to pull the front cover. Maybe the whole cam, if its engraved on the back. I'll bet if you're running it on the street without much worry, it's probably pretty tame, though. Springs good to .650 lift would fix your sleepless nights, more than likely*.

* if you do this and it still blows, its not my fault.

i just said f it and pulled the valve cover, so is this all stock?

i dont have a degreeing wheel nor know how to do it, so thats out of the question. im more concerned with lift(last what causes spring failure)

here is a vid of the car, one guy i know thinks its the r1 cam. would you guys agree?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tU_z...layer_embedded

im probably just worrying about nothing, but i just want to be safe. at some point this car was boosted, someone left the electronic boost gauge stuff under the glove box and on the bottom of the door jambs the paint is cracked, so im guessing that is from the car flexing.

Stock rockers. Beehive style srings are probably stock. The paint code seems to support that.

Are you sure this noise isnt in your head? My LS6 does all kinds of clicking and clacking. Between then "normal piston slap" and the clickety valve train, how can you tell?

what do you mean?????

its not not real loud valvetrain noise nothin i would be concerned about, sometimes i just hear it ticking every couple of seconds after i beat on it.

i dont think its about to blow up now, im just looking down the road because usually when you put a cam in, you should do springs to for safety
