Since I didn't see any posts like this, here goes: I had a problem with slow speed fan noise. I took the fan out and found a lot of leaves that had fallen into the motor.
It is fairly simple to remove the fan. The noise is very apparent at slow speed. I didn't see where a clamp could fall into or be indside the fan cage, from an earlies post. If you can hear your fan when running it at low speed with the engine running, you may have this problem.
Not sure that's a good idea. Yeah, WD-40 is good stuff but its not a formal lubricant for motors and so on. Some 3M machine oil or sewing machine type oil might be better. The WD stands for "Water Displacement" formula #40, that worked....out of the 39 others that didn't work as well. I'm no chemical/lubricant specialist but WD40 in my uses, doesn't last for the long term. My '99's fan started making noise with the fan lower bearing drying out (super high mileage). I very carefully drilled a tiny hole on the side of the bearing without touching the bearing itself and used a spray type lubricant, then carefully cleaning the outside of this hole, used some RTV sealant to close off the hole. It worked just great.

i can hear a strange noise and i think i may have this problem. where is the fan located?
If you remove the black cover under the dash on the passenger side (two black inserts, just pull down) you will see the fan. You need a 6 mm socket to remove the three screws. No need to unplug the motor just make sure it is turned off. There is also a small l shaped hose that pulls loose, no clamps. Other than being difficult to work on upside down, it is pretty easy to remove.
I removed my fan and motor, turned the assembly upside down, left overnight soaking with spray WD40 in the back bearing housing and the front bearing through the openings in the motor fame. Next day all was good doesnt squeak anymore. I backed up the WD40 with real sae20 oil mixed in.
works great,
Thanks folks for your contributions.
ps; The proceedure worked great with the assembly "bottoms up" lol
