I have a 2000 vert and a 2001 tahoe. Both have a belt squeal. I have changed the belt, the idler and belt ten. pulleys (oem) and still have the squeal. Gets worse if I use belt dressing. The belt ten. pulley is plastic. Could that be the problem and is there a metal replacement. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Andy
You probably know this but NEVER use belt dressing on a serpentine belts!! (I did once). I'm guessing you're going to have to clean all the pulleys with some solvent and then install new belts.
Then if you still have problems you can localize the problem by using a rubber hose as a listening device to find the noise maker.. Spraying a little water on the belt will help you trouble short for a short time.. It acts as a lubricant but will go away as it dries...
Good luck... Oh, and buy good belts!! Cheap ones are a major pain!!
Trying to clean the dressing (or coolant) off of a squeaking belt wont work.
Countless times the shop at a Corvette dealership has tried it.... they always put a new belt on if coolant was an issue (water pump drools onto the crank pulley and a new belt gets the remnants.)
Perhaps your crank pulley is wobbling? (search this forum, it's common)
