Think my alternator bearing is going bad. Checker Auto tells me there is no kit to repair this, just replace alt unit. I have an A4, & they are telling me that alt is different for auto than manual trans. Is this true? If so what's the difference? Will a manual trans alt function OK on an auto or not?
What makes you think the alternator is going bad? There are a couple of other things that exhibit the same symptoms. What are you seeing?
The alternators are different. From gmpartshouse.com:
Alternator, corvette, manual trans
01-04 $622.86 $404.50
Component Parts Not Serviced Separately.
Alternator, corvette, auto trans
01-04 $649.64 $422.08
Component Parts Not Serviced Separately.

A screeching, grinding noise from the front of the alternator, but gauge still shows normal output. Parts guy at checker auto said the front of the alternator pulley sticks out inch or so past belt and that was a clutch drive for the alternator and was only on auto alternators. He said that is what is going bad. Could that be correct?
