Default Engine Oil Temp Too High?

Hey guys, after some hardcore high rpm canyon carving yesterday and today after soem spirited driving I took a look at my oil temps. Yesterday was 244 and today was 255 degrees. Does that sound too hot? The motor is newly forged (2500mi) rebuilt LS6 with 12:1 compression and I just started using Royal Purple 15w-40 now that broken in. Is it time for an oil cooler?

That's not TOO hot, but if you see 250+ oil temps more often than not, an oil cooler would be a good idea.

I do not think 255 is bad at all ..... Consistent 280s / 290s may be time to get concerned. Normal day to day driving puts you probably near 200 / 210 right? If you track the car I think a oil cooler would be needed as you will see temps right up near 290/300 with a LS6. Canyon Carving is probably not something you do every day so I would think the occasional 250 / 260 will not do any damage at all. Lets see what others think...

With oil cooler on my LS6 pushing hard she runs near 260 .... Normal driving puts it at about 180 uncovered and covered near 190/195 (have to cover it with cardboard during NC winter to get temps up)

This was some pretty hard driving so Im sure that reg driving temps should be fine. Also I wannabe safe come summer time. Thats why I went with Royal Purple, I wanted a good synthetic that will hold up in high heat apps too.

Thnx guys. I will keep my eye on regular driving temps too. One more thing, its been around 40 degrees where I live in the mornings and 45-50 at night. I wonder if it will take forever to get the oil up to temp with a cooler?

With a Oil Cooler you will notice lower temps and longer warm up times but soon as fall arrives I put a piece of cardboard in front of mine and it gets my temps up about 15 ....

I just block my oil cooler off with a zip tied piece of plastic in cold weather

Today was a warmer day and I noticed oil was around 200-205 degrees. After a few minutes of driving in 3rd on the freeway just to see what it did it got up to 260 but quickly went down after regular cruising. Im thinking a cooler might be a good idea as the weather gets warmer plus I always let the car idle for a while as it gets warm before driving. Any cooler recommendations? Ive seen a nice B&M kit for $120, stack plate style cooler.

I didn't really worry aout temps on the street, and I drive pretty hard. On the track I started hitting 300-305, so I had ECS install a DeWitts combo, have never had a problem since.

I would have to agree with these guys. These temps don't seem that bad compaired to some that I've heard about. But if you're still concerned about and you want to improve your coolant temps as well, we offer a combo unit like the one stated above. It's our A97EL radiator EOC combo. It has twice as thick radiator as your stock unit with an intergrated EOC in the driver side tank. Here is a link to our web page which also talks about the hose kit to install it with.

Thanks,
John

Thnx guys. I know temps could be worse but I just wanna make this powertrain last as long as possible especially since this motor is a revver and already creates a lot of heat. Those radiators seem pretty cool too, def a possibility.

As for an oil cooler, do any of you if this B&M kit will work on a C5? Ive seen it on LS1 Camaros but I just wanna make sure the oil filter adapter works on our oil pans. Thnx.

Lol. It is scary if that happened but im sure those radiators are nicely welded.

Thing is I still want a few more mods before I drop $500+ on a radiator.... even though it is worth the money.

Just putting in a DeWitts rad with out connecting the oil cooler will still lower the oil temps. IMO, I wouldn't suggest putting in a dedicated oil cooler before putting in an upgraded radiator.

I'd be more afraid of not getting the lines secure or melting a hose because its too close to the exhaust, or routing it badly and causing it to rupture or leak (oil burns well). A lot of things to go wrong for no real gain. DeWitts has a nice setup to connect the oil cooler to the engine, has hard lines near the engine which makes a lot of sense to me.

Lastly, the kit you show above looks to have a connector that goes between the oil filter and the engine, this will put your oil filter very close the the ground and may not be a good idea. DeWitts and Lingenfelter replace the oil temp sensor with a unit that routes the oil to the cooler and supports the temp sensor, a much better design for the Vette.

Yeah, next thing you know, someone will get the crazy notion to cool the transmission fluid through the radiator....

That is about the size of the oil cooler I have on my very hot 402. I don't think you want to do the sandwich adapter as it will lower the oil filter too low. It is best to run an adapter off of the the oil pressure sensor right above the oil filter. Do a search in the road racing section and you will find numerous threads and how tos. If you are doing it right, might as well do the steel braided -an lines also.
