Hey guys... :seeya Are there any difference between 160 thermostats and 180? Which one is better for your car? Also, do you need the fan relay switch with your thermostats? :jester
If the car is only driven in nice weather go for the 160* if you drive it when it is cold get the 180* Either way you will need a fan relay switch or programming or else the fans won't come on any sooner and the temps will stay the same as before
In Cali I think 160 is fine, but in WINTER states (Boston haha), I would go with 180. I used to have the 160 in another car and it just would never warm up in the winter.
   Yesterday it was in the teens here. You need to come to OK for a while then you will think 40s are warm but by the time you got here it would probably be 80
I put in the 160 2 weekends ago when it was nice and toasty 76 in Dallas. We had your OK weather. It was 25/26 all day on Sunday. I also put in a variable fan controller and set it for about 174.
Anyway, the car warmed up just fine and the heater warmed up the car just fine with a 160 thermo. I can run the car hard and the oil temp never gets to 200 and the water temp stays under 180.
All a 160 thermo does is open at 160, it doesn't change how long it takes the car to get warm. Not too much at least.
The car was not cold inside. I was worried since I read so many threads here, but a lot of people seem to have problems with cheap thermostats that stay open all the time and that makes the car never warm up.
i got the the hyperstat (I think) from corvettes of Houston in the mall. It was here in a day.
I would personally run the 180 with appropriate fan switches. The oil temp optimum temperature is the 200-210 degree range. The optimum coolant temp is in the 180-200 range. I found 160 to be too low on my C4 with the oil cooler keeping the oil temp almost at coolant temp. I eventually went to the 180 and my temperatures were exactly where I wanted them.
I'm in San Mateo and I use a 180. During cold winter spells I find the 160 takes sometime to get the engine warm and thus no heat inside the car. I'm talking 5 miles before the heater will work.
Durning summer while on the freeway the temps about 195. When on El Camino I don't see over 195/205.
Thanks, Dan..
THat help me a lot with my decision. Also, all the guys who post, thanks a lot for your help. You guys at CorvetteForum are GREAT...
