Default Magnesium wheel question

Do you have to have the rubber rings that go behind Corvette Magnesium wheels?

There are rubber rings? Like a spindle to wheel gasket or something?

Its a rubber gasket that was attached to the back ,and by attached I mean they were just stuck on to two of my rims when I purchased. They go on back of rim between disc and back of rim.
Maybe they are used because its two different metals!

Yep, that's the reason. Many people with mag wheels seem to be missing 1 or 2 of them.

I contacted Speedline about these as I'm missing a couple myself. They are no longer available from the manufacturer.
The reason for these is not the difference in metals, but they are simply a watertight gasket to keep moisture from the inner hub area of the wheel. Uncoated magnesium's exposure to water will corrode the wheel over time. I drove mine all summer without these rings with no issues whatsoever. I am in the process of having my wheels powdercoated, so this hub area will be taken care of.

You may want to throw some paint or coating on the inside hub area to minimize any corrosion potential.

huh. I'm missing all four. I will have to get in there and paint I guess.
Wish I'd known this when I had the wheels off for the Z06 vent install.

I wouldn't get paranoid over this. I tend to address issues before they become such, but that's just me. If you don't drive or live in a high-humidity/rain area or you wash your Vette often, the magnesium corrosion issue shouldn't be a problem. If you do and don't have the rings, it may be worth inspecting your wheels. It should be a one-time look-see, address-and-forget.
