I had an old '81 F250 4X4 w/460ci that I used ATF in. I had one PS pump go out and I went to a U-pull it, and got one for 25 bucks.
When I was a kid, my dad said it was all pretty much the same stuff and that you could use ATF in the PS. And I'm sure that back in the 70's and 80's that was true. But today's technology has lead to very application specific fluids for our cars for the performance and longevity of each system.
I would NOT use ATF in my vette PS system unless I ran into a dire PS fluid emergency!
I know this is an old thread, but it was the first one that came up in the search that pertained to my question.
I just finished installing a new dampener pulley and noticed when I took the rack out, the fluid looked and smelled just like automatic trans fluid. I'm buttoning everything up and see the owners manual says to use GM PS fluid. I look here and some threads talk about various different fluids.
I'm wondering what is in my system.
Is GM fluid red?
If not, I'll bet there is some form of automatic trans fluid in there.

I would flush it out and install the proper P/S fluid and no the GM fluid is clear.
