On my way home the road had a crown in it and ripped a hole in my filter. It ran for a short period of time without pressure but i thought nothing of it. I replaced the oil and filter and drove it. after it warmed up and I pulled up to a stoplight it was making some funny noises. It sounds like metal clanking in the engine. I dont know if I threw a rod bearing or something but it needs to get fixed. Also the piston slap has become pretty bad on the startup when its cold. I talked to my insurance company and it will be covered if I decide to get it fixed. Also they said if I do the work myself they will write me the check that they would give to the dealer instead of to them. This is what I would rather happen so I was wondering if anybody has had any experience with how much it costs for the dealer to remove and install a motor in an 01. Also if they did any internal fixin. If I do it myself Ill probably go with a 383 build so I need to have a basic idea of how much Im looking at. Thanks. Sorry I dropped my laptop off my lap on my bed and it hit the enter button when it fell and changed my title.

It would probably be about the same price if not cheaper to do a 383 bulid instead of a dealer doing a stock swap. Plus its alot more fun to do the work yourself!!!
Ya I thought I broke the oil pan but just had a few nicks. The oil filter had a tear across the bottom of it where it had scraped. The exhaust had a few nicks but no holes. The crown in the road is from semi's and combines driving on it all the time and it has apparently gotten pretty bad. Yes my plan is to take it to the dealer but I was just wondering if any of you have ever had to have the engine pulled out of your car from the dealer and how many hours they charged you.

So how do you plan not doing this AGAIN? Is your car lowered?
As others are pointing out, its pretty hard to rip the oil filter without destroying the rest of the underside. Then you drove the car anyway with no oil pressure? Dude, I'm having a hard time trying not to say anything bad to you but come on, no oil pressure, most people know that you can't continue driving it. You must shut it down right then. Most likely the engine has been severely damaged and yes, as others have pointed out, you need to take it to the dealer or whomever you wish and get the engine replaced. Whatever road you were on that ruts in the road are so bad that you can rip the oil filter, that road needs to be avoided completely. Frankly, I'm picturing ruts a good 6-8 inches deep and its hard to believe. Pictures please of the damage to the car and the road would be helpful here.
the k&n oil filter does hang below the pan. i used it once and went back to a napa filter...
Geez, talk a bad design. I understand people wanting a bigger filter for the extra oil capacity and so on but on a car as low as a vette, you are asking for trouble.

Wow talk about a bash fest jeeze. For some of you who think that I ran it for a while with no pressure you are wrong. It went maybe 30 ft until I go over to the side of the road. Part of that was before the light even came on after I heard it hit. Leave the tools alone? I've worked on dozens of cars and assisted on motor swaps. I've been in the auto business for about three years and been working on cars since 15. I also have thousands of tools at my side while doing this. How exactly does your oil filter hang lower than the rest of your car? It doesn't on mine and I have no clue how it hit where it did but I'm lucky.

Why the hell are pics necessary? This whole post has gone beyond my main question of how long it takes to R&R the engine in a corvette at the dealer! The road is usually avoided as much as possible but I was going to help a friend who lives on the road. I have taken it dozens of times with no issues besides this one. Why did I take the vette? Because I was on my way home from work and its my DD. If pics are really necessary here you go. There is still some oil from the mess but I have cleaned most of it off.
And to show how low it sits. I had it in the air so the suspension is a little bit higher but not by a whole lot.
So back to my main question. Does anybody know how much time the dealer charges to remove and reinstall an engine? Also if anybody has has the rod bearing replaced by the dealer the book time on that also please? Thanks!

First picture of the bottom of the oil filter: looks to me like you ran over something laying in the road. There is no way that the crown of the road did that to the filter.
The last picture of the car looks like it has not been lowered. Is this right after you took it off the jack?
I don't know why you're complaining about the bashing. If you re-read your first post, it sounds like you ran it without oil pressure, and thought nothing of it. Your question about cost is impossible to answer because it's an event that doesn't happen very often, and I'd imagine the price varies greatly from dealer to dealer. And that's not even taking into consideration all of the variables regarding which parts are needed, and any upgrades you might want to do at this opportune time. Good luck getting your baby back on the road....just choose a better road next time.
lighten up on the guy. takes 2-3 days for an engine swap if engine in stock, dealers slow, if repairing engine and just a bearing spun and crank ok they could have it out in couple days if parts on hand. my experience is 3-5 days for engine work. corvette shop could do faster if they could get it in. Sorry to hear of your troubles....doesn't matter why he had engine damage in my opinion, still need to be kind and help the bro outgood luck on your repair, hope it is less damage than you think

When I posted my not so favorable comments it was in regard to the above. It did sound like you continued to drive it without a worry at all. I'm sorry if I misunderstood your post.
I have seen these crowns and usually the rubber facing under the front of the car will rub first.
I have a couple of them on the roads that I travel and avoid them by driving the car in such a manner that both wheels are on the high sides.
Pictures were asked for so that forum members could see exactly what happened and hopefully avoid the same thing happening to them, even though it could be a rare experience. I do agree that the filter looks as if something else hit it, due to the fact that there is no other undercarriage damage. I have also thought about the placement of the oil filter underneath the car in such an open spot. That is why I won't buy any filter that extends below the oil pan.
