Default Squeaky belts

My belts are always squeaking when the engine is running. I know you can spray those "Belt Ease" stuff to quiet (lubricate) them, but is that bad for your belts in the long run?

I had the same problem. I was told not to spray the belt conditioner on it to stop the squeak but I did it anyways. It made it worse, Alot worse. I had to go ahead and change to new belts. They cost about $55 each so there not cheap. I guess it could help some people but it made mine worse and I was told it would because of the groves thet are in the pully.

Hope this helps.

Don't spray any belt dressing on the belts it will make it worse, just replace it but if it still hase a noise let us know there could be other problems you did not state what year or how many miles.

I went thru all this same crap a month ago. So here's what I did to fix mine:

1) Remove the belts
2) Scrub all pulley surfaces with brake cleaner and a small wire brush to remove any debris/rust/grease
3) Install new Goodyear Gatorback serpentine belt ($29 from local parts store, much cheaper than OEM).

I tried a new GM belt, and it squealed just like the original. I also replaced the idler pulley, but upon inspection I don't think it was a problem.

The Goodyear belt is very unique. It has the pulley grooves, but then it's also cut at an angle across the belt every 1/10th inch. It makes the belt very pliable, and there's probably less surface area contact to the sides of the pulley grooves.

I haven't had any squeaking at all since then, nor any problems with belt slippage even at WOT.

The Goodyear belt numbers are:
4060802 Serpentine belt
4040420 AC belt

just got the 99 back from the dealer about 2 hours ago for this same problem. i had the squeaky belts and it was driving me crazy last saturday, so i bought a can of belt dressing and started spraying the sh** out of it until it stopped. the next time i turned on the a/c, there was no cold air. dropped it off at the dealer and the belt had come off the pulley, i didn't mention the belt dressing. they thought it was the idler pulley, but when they got a closer look they saw the front crank seal was leaking a tiny bit of oil on the belt and causing the squeak. so they replaced the crank seal, and both belts under warranty. only trouble they messed up the alignment when they dropped the front end to get at the seals. they are always good about fixing stuff like that but it means yet another trip to the dealer when i should be driving the snot out of the vette. if it's under factory warranty, let them do the repair, these cars are way too complicated, but you got ta love em.
