The back of my cars were always covered with the thin film of oil that Subdriver mentions except when the thin film was covered with thick wet power steering fluid from blowing a power steering pump on the track.
The oil consumption that is the nemesis of the C5 LSx engines had nothing to do with wear and tear. These were new engines. According to Jordan Lee , GMPT engineer (developed the GEN 4), statements of 2005 ,the C5 LSx engines are formidable . As a result of the oil consumption issues( blow-by) the LSx engines have been tracked, and autopsyied in record numbers. There is no correspodence between this specific oriented blow-by & accelerated engine wear. The GMPT results show little wear at 300,000 miles!!!! ( my personal logic disagrees with the GMPT findings as carbon build up is historically detrimental).
Also a cylinder leak down or compression test will no validity in diagnosing the conditions of GM ID 89459.
The three (3) most affective actions for an OEM LSx engine are : (1) R&R the second compression ring and oil control rings( with napier scarper/ higher tension rings). (2) Upgrade the engine to the latest PCV system.(3) Add an efficient oil catch can (and an installation method that derives the most effective results).

DieselDave56, thanks for the info, didn't you used to work at Bowling Green or something? or was it for GM in Detroit? Anyway, I think I'll look into upgrading the PCV system, sounds like that is the least expensive option. I assume there is info here on the CF about that, I'll do a search.
Thanks again!

Correct me someone if I'm wrong ( I deal mostly with LS6 upgrades). Wasn't it 2001 or 2004 LS1 that was first year to share the LS6 PCV oil control baffle/ oil separator location under the manifold valley pan? if not here's a link for that swaphttp://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?article=18
The LS2 PCV is also an upgrade from the LS6 as the LS2 utilizes two (2) oil control/separator baffles ( one for the inlet side and one for the fouled exit side) http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...s1-to-ls2.html
