I have installed a K&N twin flow intake that I ordered from West Coast Corvettes, is it worth the expense and trouble of installing the cold air screens that they sell to replace the stock inserts around the fog lamps?
IMHO, it's worth it just for the cosmetic qualities. The Z06 cold air screens give the car a "finished" look. If you get a performance increase, that's a bonus. Get the screens, well worth it and a no brainer to install.
ThumbsUp - I think he is referring to the plastic piece around the fog lights, not the Z06 screens. Gansett- from what I understand they are not that easy to install and not worth the hassle. I guess you could remove the fog light piece and put the Z screens on the outside. :seeya
I purchased the WCC cold air screens that fit around the fog lights. Initially I wanted to keep full foglight functionality. But on receipt I was disappointed in their construction.
IN HINDSIGHT MHO is to ask yourself if you really need the foglights...if your answer is "no" I would remove the stock air deflectors (GM's term for the inserts) and install the Z06 screens to get cold air to your intake. Appearance would definitely look better.
The Cold Air Screens (misnomer IMHO) WCC sells replace the plastic inserts set deep in the fascia recesses and have an opening for the foglights. The Z06 screens (bug-graters:lol:)are mounted flush with the fascia. I removed the plastic inserts to allow cold air in and mounted the Z06 screens for appearance.
You won't lose the functionality of the foglights with either the Cold Air Screens or the Z06 screens.
I order a set of these! Afterwards read somewhere that they are a pain to install.Thinking of using a hole saw on the stock one's and putting the screen's on.
Another question... my C5 is my daily driver. If I install these screens (after removing the factory plastic pieces), isn't the first rain going to give me a soaked engine compartment and two soggy intake filters???
When I installed mine I completely removed the front facia. I also completely removed the plastic insets and I bolted the screens in place. About a 2 hour job with an assistant. Now its a straight shot to my K&N FIPK. The engine compartment doesn't seem to get any dirtier.
Here's what I've done on the past THREE C5's I've owned. Get a 1-inch wide drill bit. Drill five (or more) holes in the existing, black plastic inserts. (Each time I did it, I ran my hand along the inside, back of the inserts to insure that I wasn't going to unintentionally drill something else!) You've just created increased airflow to your engine. Now, mount the Z06 style air screens, and voila! Nice, finished product, a LOT cheaper than buying new inserts!

They were worth the expense for me. I let the dealership install with the other first mods as part of my purchase.

I had PIAAs installed and didn't want anything to degrade their look no matter how small it is with Z06 screens.
I haven't had any problems with water getting up to my Blackwing filter through that area yet.
I put them on my 2001 conv. They looked really cool. No extra dirt noted in the engine compartment. There won't be any SOTP difference. I painted my sreens silver to match the car. Left the surround black. I'm talking about WWC cold air screens that go with the Twin Flo air filter, not the Z06 screens. I wrote up an instruction sheet on the install if you are interested.

Or you can just drill the holes neatly, without removing or buying anything.
I made a drilling template and viola, free mod. You can check them out on my "Corvette Site" at http://www.johndennington.com under "How To's", look for "Custom Cold Air Screens"
I bought the WCC cold air screens. After 3 different tries of over 1 hour each I gave up and sold them off. Also I read in the Dave Hill interview that the aerodynamics of the C5 cause no air to enter via that section of the front even if nothing was there. So all those holes in what ever have no affect.
As someone else stated I also found the WCC screens a disapointment. Essentially some one cut out the center of standard ones and literally glued on a plastic mesh on the back.
I do think the silver Z06 type screens look cool and may put those on over the standard fogs and screens.
Go read Dave Hill before you waist your time cutting up your fog light area.
You could call it "opened up" or you could call it "left some parts off", like in reduced cost - no fog lights and no "deflectors" just the front appearance screens. Just another way to look at it.
