Z06 rear diff fluid change
My tires are balanced as far as I know, and this does not sound like a tire, since it is not really speed dependent. Also if you put the car in neutral it is stil there. I was thinking it might be a wheel bearing, but now am thinking about diff fluid. My 95 z28 was squeaking and making noise like crazy, and change the fluid, voila ok again!
I didn't check my owners manual, but what is the service interval on the rear oil? My z28 was I think change it after 5000 miles, and you only need to do this once.
Anyone had any problems with the diff oil>?
thanks
Tim
The 2001 service manual indicates NO change is necessary for either the rear differential and the 6 speed transmission which calls for dexron lll (3) (non synthetic). I just recently changed (23k) 1. engine oil 2. synthetic ATF (6 speed transmission) and 3. synthetic 75w-90 (rear differential)with GM p/n1052358 4 oz., all Mobil One.
I can say two things: 1. I have a baseline and the synthetic ATF seems to have smooth out the shifting.
In your case however, I would get the mechanic to look at the problem that you mention before changing fluids, if you are so inclined.
Then when you are ready to change the fluid here are some pics:

The Mobil One synthetic ATF in the 6 speed transmission is subtlely smoother.
