Being that it is an AGM battery if you car is not a daily driver I wouldn't recommend it unless you plan to keep it connected to a battery tender or similar device.

My experience with Optima red top batteries is that they are fine for cars that get every day use or at least once a week, but if you go a couple of weeks without starting them you will have problems. And if you allow an AGM battery to become completely discharged, it may not ever hold a charge again.

I have the 15 lbs battery in my car for almost a year.

No serious probs so far, but I live in Houston where it is warm. Sometimes when it is really cold (30 degrees), it seems like the battery is a little week.

I drive my car 3 X a week.

I am getting one and getting it very soon

Weight savings in itself is worth the money - you can also get them at Summit Racing

Thanks,Matt

Yeah, the 15 pound battery is a little weak for cold weather. The 15 pound version is not good for a daily driver in weather under 60 degrees. What we stock as the best option for the average daily driver the 3121. At 21 pounds it still provides right around 15 pounds of weight savings over a stock battery, provides great cranking amps and is rated for the cold weather. We also stock the 2317 which is a good balance between the 15 pound battery and the 21 pound version I was just talking about. It is a little weaker than the 21 pound version, but should still be ok in moderate cold and only weighs in at 17 pounds.

If you want to look through these options, check out www.braillebattery.com and look through the "no weight" batteries listed on the left. We also stock the Carbon Fiber versions listed just below those for those who like that look. I even stock some of their accessories like the 2amp trickle charger .

If interested in pricing just shoot me a private message or give me a call!

-Jesse

My 03 still has its original AGM battery in it. Its never been on a trickle charger and it sits frequently for up to 2-4 weeks and starts every time. Was worried after 7 years this winter after sitting a few weeks in a 40 degree garage it might not start but it fired right up so going on 8 years now for it. I sure wouldn't hesitate to get another AGM type.

Okay I placed the order this morning for my Braille 17lb 2317R (Right side positive) Battery from SCPC - Scoggin Dicky Parts Center from Jesse!

It was a seemless transition and he really, really beat the Summit Racing Parts price

Plus they are a Forum vendor and I always like to support our Forum Vendors

Thank you guys - I also will do a write up with some pics of how it looks installed If you are on the fence now might be the time to get one

Thanks,Matt

I'm glad you got a good one, I'm not an Optima basher like many on this forum I'm just relating my experience with an Optima red top.

From my experience and the experience of many forum members, AGM batteries and in particular the Optima red top batteries have problems when the cars are not driven regularly or kept on a float charger. If you do a search on this forum for Optima red top and discount all the really negative stuff (what I call the "Red Top Bashers") you will find that the majority of owners of AGM batteries and in particular the Optima Red Top have had starting and other battery problems if the car sits a couple weeks or more without being started or put on a float charger, and if you allow a Red Top to completely discharge, it is almost certain death for that battery no matter what its age.

Hi, guys. I noticed our batteries mentioned and wanted to chime in and see if I could be of any help.

ljthe2nd, I’m sorry to hear you’ve had trouble with your RedTop. Optimas are more resilient to long periods of storage than traditional flooded batteries, but proper maintenance and storage of any battery will help extend its lifespan.

Newer Corvettes (especially ZO6s) are known to have much higher than average “key-off” loads and will discharge batteries when they sit for extended periods of time. A battery tender/maintainer is an excellent investment for anyone who owns one of these vehicles, regardless of the battery they use. If your vehicle is not driven daily, disconnecting your fully-charged battery (or installing a cut-off switch) is also a good alternative, in addition to providing an additional deterrent to thieves.

If your Optima does get deeply-discharged, this video describes charging techniques that can be used to recover it- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIoaL3DWWEg

If you have any other questions, I’ll do my best to answer them.
