Default Eureeka! A no welding required short shifter made from stocker!

After all the cool posts by Benelliwang and GMan and others,
I decided to try my hand at making a short shifter without welding.

Since I have a MOMO **** that doesn't require threads I decided to find out if there was enough shifter shaft beneath all the OEM cover up.

I enlisted my neighbor Tom73 to do the initial cutting since he has every tool known to mankind and he is much more mechanically inclined than yours truly. :D

Basically we cut the black tube on both sides and then pulled out the interior piece (alloy colored) which has the rubber filled cylinder surrounding the shaft.

We cut the cylinder off and then were left with just the shaft.

I left the base as is and didn't cut off the rivets.

Here are some shots with the shifter installed.

I REALLY like this mod. :yesnod:

All thats left is to get a shorty shift boot. :D

Thanks fellas!

MySea5,

No problems thus far.

It shifts really smoothly and feels great.

Removing the rubber filled cylinder has increased the notchy feel
of precision that the OEM piece acked IMO.

Nice job, but way to short for me, I just installed my Hurst today, as short as yours is, it still is the crappy factory shifter only with a shorter throw. But it is a cool "no money" mod. I shortened my boot myself, instead of buying the much better Ken King boot. But I think it looks great and the price was right!!

Scott97,

How much effort does it take to shift? Just asking as you have lost most fo the mechanical advantage.

Cool idea....and its free too!

Damn Scott - that is one low shifter - I like.

Hopefully you'll be at MTI tomorrow and I can see that bad boy. Like everyone else who reads this, none of us is going to believe you can actually shift one that short - except that I know you and you would not :bs us.

Hope to see you soon.

I guess it is just me but all I see are some red X's and I really wanted to see the shifter.
I used the same method as Scott97 and I like the results.

How did you attach the shift ****? The existing shaft is only 10mm

Thanks! You'd be surprised at how well it shifts and feels. I've been using a Kirban shifter for over 2 years now and I like this better.

Its easier to shift than the Kirban. I was very surprised.
The shifts are very positive and I get the same kind of feel.

Jim,

Thanks! I'm going to take some video first thing tomorrow so folks can actually see me shifting.

I don't think that I will be there tomorrow but you never know ;).

Is there another MTI dyno day tomorrow?

I have a MOMO **** that slides over a rubber sleeve that slips over the shifter shaft using 3 allen set screws.

The stock shaft had rubber residue left over from the mod and I left it on and it provides more surface to grip.

Scott - tomorrow No Mercy is going to be at MTI, and a bunch of us are going to lunch with him. Probably same place we had lunch a couple of weeks ago. There is a post on his in SW Events section.
