Default Service Manuals--Reading material

I just got a set of Service Manuals. Awesome set of books. It looks like I have reading material for the next few years. They cover every single piece of the car with how-tos, diagrams, torque specs, tools, everything.

They were the first thing I ordered after getting my car. They are an incredible source of info even for those who don't do their own work on their car. I'm willing to bet that you are also one of the few that read their owners manual cover to cover.

I've pretty well dog-eared all three volumes of my set too. One thing that I immediately noticed is that apparently Helm Publishing hires brain dead morons to proof read these things. I have found more mis-spelled words, syntax problems and outright wrong info. than you can shake a stick at. The syntax and spelling problems are the worst I've ever seen in any "technical" publication. Now I double check the torque specs too after having found a few listings for Newton Meters as Pound Feet and vice versa.
Overall there's a lot of useful info, but for '99 at least, the quality stinks! :U

Set of Factory Shop Manuals was my first purchase also. I always get a set with each car I buy. I do most of work myself, after having supposely "professional" mechanics "butcher up" several repairs. Shop manuals are a necessity !

IF you want it done right, you do it yourself !

Tx99FRC is right- there are a lot of typos and mistakes in the Service Manual. But still a great source of information. My car normally gets worked on by a local shop that does good work but not many Corvettes- any time they are doing something a little complicated, I photocopy the appropriate pages and give then to the tech in case he needs 'em. That way he doesn't have to spend a half hour looking through that god-awful index in the manual.

Default Manual correction catagory in the form?

I have an idea. Why can't the forum set up one small catagory for technical corrections. Then every time someone finds a real problem like a wrong torque spec or scale called out, they could post it for everyone to make the correction in their own manual. Good idea or not? Mike
