None other than a lousy, stinking exhaust and possibly 2-3 hp. If you want to mod the exhaust get headers and cats with x-pipe. Then you'll be doing something worthwhile hp and sound wise, and you'll still be leagal and not polluting your nose or the world. It is federally illegal to tamper with emissions regardless of local laws.
I know from experience with other sports cars I have owned in the past, gutted cats sound absolutely horrible. Don't waste your time unless you want your car to sound like a 1982 K-car with a busted muffler. No good ever comes from gutted cats.
I got a pm out of the blue by a guy with 1 post wanting to ask me an exhaust tech question.
I gave my cell phone number and we talked....
He has a C5 and got a stock h-pipe with gutted cats for free and installed it in place of his stock catted h.
He asked me if he should have "that stinky lawn mower/propane gas smell".
He said it started immediately upon swapping the pipes.
I told him that I had a car and cut the cats in the past when I didn't care about people behind me smelling fumes and hating my ride because it was a stink bug...
He said for sure he was putting his catted h back on, because he felt no change in power, in fact the sound got raspy and "sloppier" and it wasn't worth his clothes stinking when he got out of the car.
As others have stated, leave them in or replace them. Catless is a stinky nightmare. Sure, no one cares about who's behind you, but trust me when I say the smell will make its way into the car while you are sitting at stop lights. There's just nothing appealing about the prospect at all unless you're just using it for track duty.
You may actually LOOSE power! The hollow cat, will cause a loss of exhaust velocity and turbulence in the exhaust system. It sounds worse and yes,, the smell will get to ya.
