Well, I guess we could go round and round on this. The 68 Z28 was a solid lift motor with 11:1 also, unless my 1971 Chiltons Manual is wrong.
Good lord.....yes....all the 302's were solid lifter, high compression...blah blah blah. I was just trying to explain the details based on your understanding. This is soo f*&king off topic....I don't know why I bothered.....
Still doesn't tell you what it actually stands for, but it has to do with the engine. Read on...
The LS series is expansive ranging from 4.8 to 7.0 in steel and aluminum. The crank on all LS engines save for the 4.8 and 7.0 are the same 92mm (3.62). And if I am not mistaken all LS series also have aluminum heads.
Heres some LS info for ya.

LS6 and 7 should be known already as Z06 only motors and LS9 is just rumored at this point. But anyway thats all the info I could dig up on LS engines and cars installed.
LS1, LT1, L98, L88 etc. are production codes at GM. Recently these production codes have been 'marketized'. As consumers equate certain production codes with a model or performance GM marketing has taken advantage of it. They've put badges on cars representing the production code because consumers equate these to style or performance. I've heard Z28 was originally a production code. I wouldn't be surprized if ZO6 and ZR1 back in 1962-1963 were origiannly prototype codes but stuck in consumer's minds as performance.

I don't know if everyone ever asked this question before but what dose LT1, LS1 stand for. I've been asked this question several times at car shows and I don't know how to answer.....Thanks!
