That would make it Edsel Ford then? EF? How about LA over at Chrysler. I know the L stands for "Light" but why "A" and not "T" or "V"?

Point is, I don't think it necessarily "stands" for anything. It's just an RPO code, same as Z06 or UNO.

Interesting Question - my Corvette coffee table book has nothing to say on the subject. I found this thread, which, if nothing else is funny:

http://forums.finalgear.com/question...tand-for-4343/

closest attempt at an actual answer (although I don't think its correct) is: "Didn't LT1 stand for Light Truck and LS1 mean Light Sports 1st Gen (Light being used loosely)?"

Interesting question though!

Sounds good, but IIRC LT1 was installed in sports cars (Camaro, T/A, Vette) as well as the truck, and was a predecessor to the LS series.

Here is another link, but I have no idea if Larry S. has anything to do with it.

Considering the LT1 only came in a few different cars (the Y, F and B bodies and maybe one other body??) I highly doubt it meant "light truck".

I have always considered the LT1 the test bed engine which helped lead to how well the LS1 runs.

LS1 is the RPO (regular production order/option) for designating the engine. ALL GM engines start with "L". I don't know the "S1" or "S6" part. If anyone saw the RPO label in their vehicle, it starts from "A" all the way to "Z". A = interior codes/options; J = brake options; L = engine option; Z = suspension option. This applies to ALL GM vehicles (don't know about medium/heavy duty vehicles).

From a distance me too. Although I've never owned a Ford with an FE 427, I always wanted to build a Cobra kit car with the real deal for the engine. A side oiler 427 with a bad attitude in front of a top loader 4 speed.
