Default question on short throw shifter

I have a question about why you would change out the stock shifter to a hurst short throw shifter - anyone have an opinion ?

Everyone on here has an opinion. You will get 4000 of them. The stock shifter is Mickey Mouse compared to aftermarket. I pulled the Hurst out of mine and went with the MGW. Very happy with it.

The stock shifter, while quiet, effortless, and vibrationless, has loooooooong throws and is very tall. A short-throw shifter like the Hurst or my BPP requires more effort but has a very satisfying bolt-action feel to it. Some C5 owners go halfway by installing a C6 Z06 shifter, which has shorter throws than the stock C5, but not as short as many aftermarket shifters.

At one time, HURST used to be "the" shifter of choice. Not necessarily so anymore. There's lots of options...

This is the third thread I have seen like this so far this week, but what the hell, +1 for MGW.

Stock = Tall/Sloppy

Aftermarket w/ Adjustable Bias Springs (Hurst or similar) = More precise, shorter throw, a little more to much more centering force "notchiness" depending on the springs you install. Softer springs mean less centering force so less "notchy", but also less precise feeling. Stiffer springs mean more centering force so more "notchy" but a very precise feel.

Aftermarket without adjustable springs (MGW) = More centering force, "notchy" and precise.

C6Z06 = Stock "feel" slightly shorter throws.

It's really all about what you want, but ANYTHING will be an improvement over the C5 stock shifter. It just depends on what kind of improvement you want. Personally I love MGW, it's like a knife through hot butter. I had a Hurst before I got my MGW, and I'm glad I changed...

If you want to stick with the stock shifter but lower the **** about 1/2" to 1" there is a real easy way to do it. It might make it feel like it shortens your shifts a little.

Take a look at this link: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/1573307760-post19.html for instructions.

..rickko..
PS. After doing this mod I eventually bought a Hurst with Hurst shift **** ball. Love it and love the way the ball feels in my hand.
