How necessary is it to have both the inner and outer surfaces of headers ceramic coated? Is it all for corrosion protection or is there a flow benefit? Is the additional cost of having the inner surfaces coated worth the added cost? Would opt for the stainless headers except they are just too darn expensive. Appreciate the information and help...thanks!
Joe
The answer to this depends on your definition of "ceramic" coating. If your looking at jet coat or like, this is an aluminized paint and is OK for corrosion protection but will not do much in the way of heat mitigation. In this case coating just the outsides is all that is required. If in fact you are going to go with "real" ceramic plasma applied coatings there is benifit to doing both the outside and inside as the additional coating will one, keep more of the heat in the exhaust stream and out of the engine compartment and two, scavanging will be assisted due to the gasses staying hot and the exit velocities remaining high. Just as a side note, your cats will be more efficient as well, due to the increased exhaust gas temps at the cats.
Ray, good response...thanks! Now that you've enlightened me, I am off to check whether I am looking at jet-coating or ceramic coating. Understanding the difference between the two, wonder if ceramic coating can be had? Thanks again....
Joe
I am not familiar with Jet-coating, but this in no way should be confused with Jet-Hot coatings which are true ceramic coatings. There is a huge benefit to coating both the inside and the outside of the tube with this and your engine compartment will remain cooler than all other vehicles equiped with headers, without regard to material used. That includes SS, it is nice but not nearly as effecient as true ceramic coatings.
Joe,
Check out the (Dan) Swain Coatings web site, this stuff is the real McCoy. Buy the headers with no coating, and send them over to him. Mallett has his personal things done there. I've had lots of work done by him as well (see my signature). If you contact him tell him Ray from Buffalo referred you.
