Modified Stock Shifter Installed. Holy Crap what a difference!
I loved the Ripper compared to the stock shifter. But I never liked the added effort.
that is exactly why I have not bought a ripper or a kirban.
about how much more effort compared to stock is this mod?
if this mod has less effort than the ripper and kirban and just a little bit more than stock, then I will be doing it!
Chuckster,
I'll be in port st. lucie the beginning of april. any way we could meet so I can feel the shifter for myself? :D

I used a different approach. I had a machine shop just cut about 1" off the stock shifter stock **** is at the top of the shifter boot.
Much better for me that the Ripper-which I kept for 1 day!

Checkster -- Looks cool! Now, I need a little more info on just what I'm looking at here...
Did you have the INSIDE of the stock threaded piece (that the **** screws down on, that you've cut off and applied to the inner shaft), and the OUTSIDE of the inner shaft (shiney silver colored) threaded, such that the top/outer piece SCREWS ON to the bottom/inner piece? Or, by using loc-tite, is the one just SLIPPED on to the other? (It LOOKS kind of like the shiney inner shaft is threaded, but it's tough for me to tell in the pictures).
If the inner shaft IS threaded (and the inside of the top piece is, too), then would the jam nut (if you wanted to raise the height of the shifter) go on the inner shaft first, then the top piece, then the nut would be backed-off against the top piece at a the new height? (I'm trying to visualize it.)
Also, one thing that I REALLY LIKE about the Ripper (that I didn't like about the CC shortened stock shifter -- just an inch or so cut off the stock threads) is the fact that it almost goes from 2nd to 3rd for you, with no hunting for the gear. Question: How is the 2nd to 3rd selection with the shortened shifter vs. the Ripper? Also, how is downshifting (let's say from 5th to 3rd) with the shortened shifter vs. the Ripper? (The Ripper is very good with both of these.)
Lastly, since the stock **** sits so low now (and since the shaft itself is so low), does your shifter boot bunch up/bind in any strange way? From the pictures, it looks like your boot has just scrunched down into the tunnel a bit more... Is this the case, or did you have to modify it somehow?
Thanks!!! :)

I threaded the top of the Inner shaft with a 10mm die. I cut off the trhreaded top 3" of the outer shaft and kept that. I then tapped the inside of it to 10mm. I used locktitie to keep it from loosening..
I shift the same as before. I never hunt for 2nd or 3rd. Just jam it straight down for 2nd and straight up for 3rd. Better than the ripper cause you can actually feel the shifts instead of muscleing the Ripper.
As far as the Boot goes.. Yes it kinda scrunches down a little. No mod needed. I HATE the look of a straight smooth boot all jacked up to the top of the shifter anyway. I love that cool scrunched up look.. :D
Thanks for the answers, Chuckster!
Oh, one more thing -- after you dremeled the outer piece of the shifter away from the inside piece, how easy was it to remove the outer piece, and how easy was it to clean up the inner piece?
Thanks!

Ok I drove it some more tonight...I have to say. This mod is a must. This shifter makes the car so friendly now. She is willing to slip into any gear on the flick of the wrist. The Ripper felt like an arm wresling match every time I got in traffic. All I have to say is try it. I promise you will never go back!

Wow. Now that is a short shifter.
Its short all right.
Chris at Speed Demon got a chance to try it out at his shop.
He was surprised that it didn't take a lot of effort to shift.
There is a side benefit to having it this short. My shift arm lays flat on the center console now. Before with the **** up high my elbow would dig into the console leaving a big depression. It was only a matter of time before I wore a hole in it or it stayed that way with a big dent.
Man... Listen to me..Talk about ****!
I need help... :D :D :D

Do you have to remove the console as it says in the manual? If so, are there any problems doing this?
Another question: how do you get the effing lock key out :cry ?

Sunvet, I pulled mine out with a screw driver. Of course I borke it in half :D doing it this way but its out now. I pulled the boot off and it looks like there is enough room to do this with the shifter in the car. I always look for the short cut and then pay somebody to fix it after I break it :smash:
Hey, i am dying to do this mod, i have a custom shift **** that looks absolutely awesome in the car, the only problem is that it is ridiculously high. I also wanted more precise shifts and was going to go with the ripper, but there is slight to no height change with that route. I was wondering if anyone in the MD/NJ area might be able to help a fellow forum member out with this one, i'll drive to meet you. I have little experience working on the car, and am scared as hell to f*ck something up. THanks a lot.
