What is the 'clunk' ???
Driving 70-80-90 on interstate --runs smooth. but then slowing down
gradual slow down--
for the off ramp--just before the stop sign---a 'clunk' sound from
underneath--maybe diff--maybe trans??? does everyone have this??
all ideas appreciated -- thanks
1. U-joints. If a U joint is getting sloppy, especially on an automatic when you put it in gear, you'll hear a clunk. To check that, with foot on the brake, put into drive. Then, without moving, drop it in reverse. If you get a clunk underneath the car, like, right under you, it's the front U. If it makes the same clunk and sounds like it's near the rear, it could be the rear U joint. You may have to hang out of the car with the door open, stick your face down as far as you can to the underside of the car to hear more specifics.
2. Tranny. Could be, hope it's not.
3. Rear end differential. Again, could be but hope it's not.
If your U joints check out and the sound doesn't happen when you try the test above, just come back and post us a followup. We'll all try to help as much as we can. Good luck.
