Default Help me choose my CAM!!!

I have a 99 FRC, 80K miles. LS1, MN6. I don't race much, but would like to visit the quarter mile a couple times a year. My car isn't a daily driver but I take every chance I can to take her out. I will be putting an LS6 intake and stock LS6 Heads on the motor at the same time. I already have a CAI and LT headers. What are some cam specs that would work well in my situation. I would like to make big horsepower but a broad torque curve is more important.

Good candidate for 21stcenturymusclecars.com CMC-14 cam (also called Lpe GT18), 228/232, .585/.595 and 113 LSA, best allrounder cam should go well with LS6 heads and Ls6 intake. Expect to make 410-415 Rwhp and broad torque curve if yours manual car, otherwise 390ish HP with Auto.

Why iam saying because i have brand new and dont plan to modify. Pm me if you are interested should be good if i ship to a local canuck bro.

This is a Comp cam and on Xer lobes. Expect little choppy idle but not too much without any cam surge, and yet still pull great from mid range to 6500 rpm.

Just a suggestion, Chris, but since you're going to all the work to install H/C, now is the perfect time to do some things. LS6 heads are great, but will work better with a CNC program, and milling to increase compression. Call TEA, or one of our fine vendors, and get a price on a Stg2 or something like that to maximize your mod. Get the chambers to around 60cc and a cam like the LG G5X-1 and it'll rock your world, have great TQ everywhere, and even increase your fuel mileage. Remember to get high quality valve springs, and pushrods, especially springs.

g5x1 on 113 or 114lsa. Cant go wrong. I got a 224/228 xer on 114+4, but wish i had gone with the g5x1 for a little more top end.. Im spraying so it all works out The cam in post #2 sounds great! About where you want to be without having to swap out the gears.

This may be a stupid question but, I have a few friends with muscle cars with big cams and some went too big and now have very poor vacume and therefore no power brakes. Are our cars set up the same way?

Did Jegs and Summit stop selling vacuum canisters?

What type of manners and HP/TQ numbers could I expect from a cam like the G5X1 with stock LS6 heads and intake manifold. I'm not looking at ending up with a race car, but would like a fairly healthy performer. Thanks.

The X1 is a Comp cam, pretty much the same as post #2 @ 228-232 and your choice of LSA. 112 is gonna have a nice lope, and 114 will be a little smoother, and easier to fine tune. I would expect about 415/395 RW assuming LTs and a CAI. You can bump that considerably if you tweak the heads like I suggested before. Either way, it'll be a nice bump from the stock cam, which is pretty wimpy.

I would have the heads cnc'd then get a custom cam to get proper valve events to match the heads for max performace for what you're looking to get from your car.

Good advice here. But if money's real tight I can understand just picking a cam and putting something together on the cheap. But in the long run it's probably far better to spend a little more on getting the heads/cam combo just right and not having regret and wanting to do it all over again later. Can't go wrong with TEA as mentioned above. I also agree that the cam in post #2 looks like a great street cam from the specs.

So far it looks like you've got good advice, if you keep bumping your post you're going to start getting conflicting opinions and ideas; then you'll really be confused

EnglandGreen Mayhem II. They'll hook you up with a great cam package. I'm running their Whiplash II and love it but the Mayhem II will give you a bit more broad torque band. Sounds great too!

find the cam that's right for you, then go one size larger, and you wont change cams 2 or 3 times like the rest of us
