Default Cam decision??

Doing a cam swap on my 2001 6spd Vert and I am having a hard time deciding between a 224/228 580 cam or the next size up, the 228/230 cam both on a 114lsa. I have posted a similar thread in the past and had pretty much settled on the 224 cam but now that I am getting ready to drop the car off at RPM Motors I am having second thoughts and don't want to feel like I should have gone bigger. It would help if I could find a direct compairson of the two cams or a dyno run of each on stock heads with associated bolt ons.

The car is not a daily driver and might not ever see the track but I can see the occasional local club run in the future and enjoy spirted street driving and using 6th gear at highway speeds.

Looking for a nice flat torque curve and the most power under the curve between 2500-5500rpms.

Thoughts?

I asked a similar question and the response I got was to pick 1 size up from the one I wanted, so get the bigger cam. You never hear people say they should've gone smaller. And a lot of people seem to eventually upgrade to bigger cams.

completely happy with my 224/228, great power all around. I tried to follow the mamo combo pretty closely and love the results.

For those that chose the 224/228 cam, did you upgrade heads at the same time?

Any idea on horsepower gain with just the 224/228 cam?

^^How about a different cam? Did you look at ECS blower cam.
Has exactly the characterstics you want.

I just installed a 224/230 .585/.595 113 LSA on a daily driver. It made great power with the 243 heads I also added. My tuner actually suggested that I go with a 114 LSA since it is a DD. I wanted to "make sure" I heard a little lope so we went with the 113 LSA. Well, I can hear the lope. I can also feel it at a stop light as it "shakes the car" slightly.

Since yours will not be a DD, I would go BIG!!!

i had a 224/224 .551.551 on a 114 was not happy and ended up swapping to a ms3 237/242, .603"/.609", 112 LSA with a m6 daily drove it for three months untuned
My word of advice --- GO BIG!
MS3 with longtubes/no cats/h pipe/old one chamber flowmasters- sounded like I was the devil and my car was made of thunder hahahaha

I've heard a lot of people who went with something like the G5X3 or MS3 or MS4 wish they went a little smaller.

Although either of the two cams the OP was considering are quite a bit smaller than those cams and would be fine for street use.

I've also heard guys saying, "A small cam is like a small dick, you always wish you had bigger." But I've looked at various sized cams and they all look the same

Man you doing cam install at rpm motors, let charlie choose cam for you, and the only thing you need to tell him is what you want out of the package. He is most trusted and reputed tuner there in your region.

If you still interested buying cam within that specs, How about my cam 228/232 .585/.595 113 LSA brand new never been installed purchased directly from 21stcenturymusclecars.com CMC-14. Pm me if you r interested, decided to stay stock for a while till financially stable.

Charlie recommened his ZZ-005 cam which is his 224/228 but I think I might have steered him in that direction in addition I think he uses this cam a lot in CA becuase it will pass smog with the right tune. The problem with smog is if they see the headers it doesn't matter what cam you have because it will not pass the visual. I might be able to register the car in NV so smog might not be a problem. I am going to ask Charlie what he thinks about bumping the cam up one size.

There is a little known cam that I have with a troque curve above 400# from app 2800 to 5800 with the max (conservitive tune) at 428 rwtq. It is exellenct for what you are looking for. TPIS 11x is what I have & you can check the idle sound from a vid in my sig. TPIS was the first to produce a easy install header for lsx engines with a TON of research on cam development..... Just food for thought.......

I see what you saying, if registered in NV and living in Cali than sure bump it up. My cam dont hurt is just tad little bigger than what Zz-005, if you are interested let me know, its brand new and purchased directly from 21stcenturymsuclecars. If you buying from charlie than go ahead not a problem, i have great respect for charlie as tuner.

I got the same cam from Charlie, which works well with a supercharger.
