For reasons beyond my control, my C5 has been stored outside with the engine unbuttoned for 3 years. Can anyone give me the 25 words or less about making sure that the engine doesn't get trashed? I'd like to avoid disassembling the whole thing, if possible.

Please be a little more detailed on the stage of disassembly and reason it was disassembled.

Heads probably placed on the engine but not torqued down; engine disassembled for GM TSB on oil consumption; new cam, heads, headers; New England; 2000 FRC 6Speed.

Wow. Your about an hour from me. I have a buddy in Long Meadow MA.
So,,,,,what are your over all intentions with the engine. Do you want to reassemble it or does it still need to have the rings replaced?
If the cylinder walls are not rusted, all you would need to do is clean it and reassemble it.
We just need to know what you want to do with it. May have to get you a MOD Party~ We love C5 MOD Parties!

Rings have been replaced. Crane 224 cam, street headers, LS2 intake, underdrive pulley, Florida Precision Porting & Polishing heads. I'll do a mod party

Ah,,,,,,come on. Ontario isn't that far. I drove all the way to the Legendary Motor Sports Show 4-5 years ago. Had a great time I'm having a MOD PARTY soon also. Have a TON of drive train mods to do! My mod party will last a couple of weekends!

Is the car stored inside or out side? Check the cylinders for rust. What parts and tools do you need???
I installed heads/cam and FAST 90/90 on my 02 Z. You will need a conversion harness for your 90 mm TB.

Let us know where and when?

The car is stored outside. I wanted to get a sense of what a new shop needs to know/do to assemble the engine. As far as tools are concerned, I need the ones that give me average eye/hand coordination and some talent with car repair. I am a total klutz...

I would like someone to help me clean the grounds since the car has sat so long.
I would start with a visual inspection. Pull those heads and the intake, toss the head bolts if you arent sure they have never been torqued before. Dump the coolant and other fluids. Like another poster said, I would look for rust on the cylinder walls and I would also look at the cam lobes and lifters closely too. I would probably replace the lifters to be on the safe side or at the very least pull them out and soak them in engine oil. If you're seeing rusty stuff when you open up the top of the engine, you will probably find it in other places not so easy to see.
Mod party ... now THATS a great idea. I'll be tearing my engine down this weekend, I wish I had thought of that !
Good luck with the project. I hope you get it back on the road soon and have some fun with the car.
