Default Question About TB Porting

Do I also "knife edge" the back side of the throttle plate as well as the front of it?
TIA

Porting TB's is generally a waste of time. Need more CFM-buy a bigger TB.

Porting a TB with any other mods, does little to any good. Get a bigger tb and intake

Do you mean "without" any other mods? I have cam, headers, X pipe, CAI & UD pulley.

I read here on the forum and elsewhere that TB porting can result in 5-7 hp. Is this not true?

I "knife edge" the back side of the leading edge, and the front side of the trailing edge.

Throttle bodies are fairly smooth inside already, the throttle plate has a special coating on it and should generally not be touched. Get a bigger TB if you think you need more flow.

Thanks for the input Doug, maybe you could explain this special coating!

with your mods, a pp tb, will do a little. I put a TPIS 78mm pp tb on my LS6 intake, with cam, LTs and other things.

What the tb did by itself, I have no idea, but the whole package does quite well.

Now if your going to do a pp tb, just buy a bigger tb. IIRC a 90mm wont fit on to a LS6 intake, unless you use a TPIS 90 tb AND their TPIS modified LS6 intake.
That is quite a combination,

I agree that porting and polishing a TB may not net you any power gains and would not recommend it for someone that would be paying to have it done. For those that want to experiment and can DYI I do advise you try it, especially if you do your own tuning. To me it is just the clean up work you do on a head/cam/intake install. I have done this on four engine assemblies, including a supercharged 3800 with a North Star throttle body, that has run low 13's and now has almost 140k mile as a daily driver.

The off idle tip in can make a very streetable performer out of a nearly 600BHP LS3. Just my 2¢ worth!

When I was originally researching getting a ported TB I asked Lingenfelter engineering what a ported TB would do. They told me on a stock car it is only worth 1-2hp. But on a car with mods, such as you have they see increases in the 5-7hp range.

So the people saying they are not worth much are correct if referencing a stock car. But 5-7hp is fairly significant for such a simple and cheap mod, and a tuner such as lingenfelter will do it for less than $100. Pretty good value, when you consider a CAI might add 12-15hp and costs $250 or headers might add 20-25hp and cost $1500.

Someone than can FLOW TEST what they have done MIGHT be useful. Some guy taking a wild stab at it will most likely do more harm than good.

He should just spend the $100 and have Lingenfelter do it, that way he will know he's getting something of quality that's been thouroughly tested and works well.
