A few months back I bought my 02Z from a stripper who neglected it. I have fixed many things on it and have it running beautifully. The only thing left to pass inspection is this damn camshaft position sensor code I cannot for the life of me figure out. Hooked up to HPtuners it shows no signal at all.
Here is what I have done:
Checked voltages to the connector.
Checked for shorts in each wire to ground and to each other.
Checked continuity from sensor side to PCM side.
Replaced sensor.
From what I can tell the only sensor tied to it is the CKP.
It seems all that is left is the camshaft and I find it hard to believe that whatever it reads off the camshaft has been ground so smooth that I get no signal, or the PCM. I am going to try swapping PCMs with a friend who has an 01z and see what happens there.
first of all, props for knowing a stripper with a C5!!!!
second of all what code is it giving you on the dash?
I'm at work right now but I am pretty sure it was P0346

I haven't, but I didn't think that was necessary for non intake related sensors.
It occurred to me after I made this post yesterday that although I checked the voltages at the connector for the CMP that does not mean the connector is good. I have the old wiring harness and have cut the CMP connector off of that to make a mock up for testing the CMP. I know that connector is good so although I hate to hack up this harness that otherwise seems good I think I am going to replace that connector.
Examine the female pins inside the connector. They have a tong that makes contact with the male pin in the sensor. Those DELPHI female pins ROT! If the female pin tong is spread / damaged,, the sensor will not work correctly because of a poor connection. I use an old male pin to test the female pins for proper connection.
I have seen numerous female pins that the male pins slide in and just fall out. There needs to be some resistance when you insert and extract the male pin.
the only thing your gonna see under the valley cover is if the actual cam slid back\up. to check the cam bolts your gonna need to tear the steering rack out then behind the water pump. im doing mine sometime tomorrow, ill let you know what i find.

Pulled the valley cover off tonight. There was no sliding the camshaft back and forth so I am pretty happy about that.

I actually never met the stripper. I bought the car from a shop that was selling it on consignment for her.
I also checked the pin tension in the connector. The one on the car was definitely looser than the spare connector I had, however I don't think it was too loose for a good connection. In any event that connector is looking like the most likely candidate for the failure. Tomorrow I will just swap in the spare connector and run a new wire all the way to the PCM.
I had replaced the wiring harness in the car with one from another 02 Z06. When I compared the connectors for the CMP between the original and the replacement I noticed that two of the wires were swapped. I never expected to see that. The engine now starts up almost instantaneously.
finally ripped the thing apart. turns out the cam bolts were loose. right away when C5kid and I looked at the bolts, 2 of them where very loose and only one was hand tight, leaving a thick bushy ***** hair gap between head of the bolt and sprocket.
