Default Rattle When Taking Off

In my 01 vert when I take off as normal I get a rattle. If I take off fast I do not get it. It is coming the area of the tranny. When it is in nuetral and just idling you can barely hear it but can feel it in the shifter. When at speed no problem. Cant hear it and cant feel it. Thinking clutch. Ahh and it only has 41,000 miles. Sounds a little premature for a worn out clutch. Have no codes at all.

I'm assuming you know the transmission is in the rear of the car. If so, and the noise seems to originate from there....I'll give one possibility.

1) Loose exhaust hangers on the midpipe.....they bolt to the rear bell housing.

There you go You'd be surprised how many don't know the tranny is in the rear on a C5. With a clutch change, you can change out the flywheel (or have yours resurfaced)...then have the assembly balance checked. Change out the slave(throwout bearing is included with the assembly), pilot bearing, and install a remote bleeder. Disassemble the torque tube to inspect the torque tube bushings for cracks. I purchased new exhaust manifold studs from the dealer just in case. Typically, a little heat will aid in the removal. Also, make sure you have a clutch line disconnect tool.

Are we sure that there is anything actually wrong? If I remember correctly, when I bought my 2001 new, the video or manual said something about noise like the OP described as normal. My car now has 15k on it and has made a similar noise since new. I thought that it may be die to the torque tube--but it's been almost 10 years now so my memory may not be so good!

Mine rattles. But I know why. In my case it's the added weights on the Centerforce pressure plate. Other rattles I've heard can be loose guts in the cat converters. As Lucky said loose exhaust hangers.

If you plan on replacing just a pilot bearing or a throwout bearing you better do some reading. You would have to be on the insane side to do all that work for a $15. pilot bearing, or a $129. slave and throwout bearing. It's an all or nothing labor intensive job. Minimum 10 to 12 hour job. 3 days if you run into the normal type of annoyances that love to pop up.

so the rattle may be a normal thing. Like I said it does pull like a champ when I get into it and there is no rattle. Thanks for all the info and for staying on track there lucky. Replacing exhaust soon so I can rule out the cat guts.

Both of the C5 6 speeds I have owned give me a little rattle if I lug it as I let out the clutch in first gear.

I had that same problem and it ended up being loose exhaust. I put my new B and B on this weekend and tightended everything up and the problem went away. You wouldn't happen to have those little chrome exhaust tips would you? Those things are notorious for loosening up and causing a rattle back there which as you know by now is right behind your tranny area. Before you go spending a lot of money (unless you just want to) check the small stuff first.
