Default Oil temp sky rocketing????

My friend installed a new factory LS6 shortblock in his car.(did do a cam swap) For the first month, all was great in the world!!! Yesterday, after a wonderful 100 mile drive in which the car performed flawlessly, the oil temp went out of sight. It reached over 280.......( Not the gauge or sender because the oil pressure dropped at the same time) He let it cool down and drove it home. The temp went back up on the ride home.

Both water and tranny temps were fine..

Any ideas w/b much appreciated..

Thanks guys...

Did you properly break in the engine before you took it on the drive? What kind of oil did you use?

Yes and yes. The car is treated like a family member and the oil was recently changed by himself. He always runs Mobil One.

No leaks either...

What did the oil pressure drop to? Did you install a new oil pump?

hows the pressure? any noise coming from the bottom end that you can tell? If you spin a bearing it will cause a lot of friction, and the oil temp would probably go up that high... but hopefully thats not it.

Pressure dropped to 18 I think he said. Once oil temp dropped to "normal" pressre goes back to normal.

He used the new oil pump that came with the crate motor.

Motor is quite as ne once temp goes down..

Could be a clogged pick-up screen on the pump. I would drop the pan and see if there is blockage.

I thought about a plugged pump or pickup. That would screw the pressure up though.. Pressure seems ok..

I know a bad bearing will reek havoke with temp.. Runs perfect when cooled down though...

No freakin idea.. Makes no sense!!

The only time I've seen oil temps skyrocket when normally driving the car is when a bearing goes out. Happened on a 350 in an old truck of mine. The rod bearing was letting go and the oil temps went really high.

Other than that - I'm guessing the sending unit.

Do you have some way of verifying the temp? IR laser thermometer? In a pinch you could spray water on the bottom after it's hot and see if it boils.

Drain the oil and use a magnet to check for metal--if the motor is making iron you probably lost a bearing. If the oil is clean/normal you will have to look elsewhere (this is where aircraft style oil analysis can pinpoint problems)

Remove the oil filter, take it apart, inpsect the pleats (from the inside, oil flow comes in through the center of the filter) and look for wear components.
Does not sound like a wiped bearing since you are reporting that oil pressure comes back to normal once the temperature drops back down.
I would focus the components that were removed and replaced for the cam swap.

High friction causes high oil temps, something sure seems to be getting tight in there!

Help! I'm an issue with oil temperature, too! I'm getting a reduce engine rpm and a high oil temperature warning...two seconds later, I get a low oil temperature warning. Changed out the oil temperature sensor with one off another motor of the same year, (it's a 1999 C5) but it's not correcting the problem. Car seems to fall on it's face with a limp mode after driving it around town for 30 minutes. Sometimes, I can shut it down and crank it back up with success. Other times, it acts up all the way home. Cleared all of the codes and the only one that keeps coming up is B1543 oil temp circuit open... any suggests? So much for our Easter Sunday ride in beautiful Florida.
