I am getting ready for my first low speed Auto Cross event. Anyone out there have any suggestion on the following aspects of the event:
Tire pressure - I am running the stock EMTs
Traction Control - On or Off
The car is an A4 - Any suggestions on which gear to place the trans into for the duration of the event. I am thinking "2"
Amy other suggestions or tricks?
You need to run at least 30 PSI minimum in your tires. When I was running on EMT's I found that 40 PSI kept the tires from chunking on the edges too badly. Traction control should be off. Start out in first, then shift to second at the first opportunity after you get moving. Shift when you are going straight and stay in second for the rest of the lap.
The best advice I can give you is to walk the track as many times as possible before you drive it, and ride with an instructor before you drive. Most events have instructors available to ride with you and you can often ride with them before it is your turn.
Go fast in the fast areas and go slow in the slow areas. Most beginners start out driving the whole course too slow then progress to driving the whole course too fast. Don't be afraid to go fast in the fast sections but slow down for the slow sections.
Thanks AllVette. I'll give this a try. I appreciate the advice. I see you are down there in The Woodlands. I work for Pennzoil (in the Baltimore area) but they have a rather large lab out in The Woodlands area. I really like that part of Texas. Good Vette weather all year.
I figured that I'll give this a try a few times. If I like it I'll start playing with some mods, like tires to improve performance. Good advice - Thanks.
