Instead of paying 300 bucks for one of those aftermarket mass air flow sensors without the screen, can I just take the screen out of the one I have and reap the same benefits or are the expensive ones calibrated a certain way? It looks to me like there is a lot of restriction going on there in that honeycomb.
The 'screen' or honey cell air flow straightener is used to straighten or direct air flow as it passes thru the MAF. The straightener allows the air meter to be much acurate. Air flow has to be very laminar no matter what the induction system its bolted to , no matter what throttle position.
Taking the straightener out will cause a greater variation in air flow signals. The '02-'04 LS6 MAF straightener was removed because air flow was deemed to be acceptable to meet emissions. The '01 LS6 could have been removed but was over looked for the M/Y. The MAF straightener was brought back in '05 for the LS2 so as to maintain better control.
Removing the straightener is an old 'hot rod' trick and generally thought to add 5 hp when used with modified ( 'streamlined') fresh air filter housing and ducting ( as with the '02-'04 LS6). Drivability issues have resulted if air flow is turbulent.

I have a 02 Z06. I bought the Halltech Venom intake and with that they give you a straightener to install. I installed it and all I know is that the overall performance with the Halltech was very good.
I know that you may have trouble throwing codes if you ever plan to install a Vararam cai. I never heard anyone say it actually improved their performance either.
Yeah I was wondering about an aftermarket housing as well. Maybe step it up to 80mm from the stock 74.5. Do you guys recommend Black Wing or Vararam for the intake. I have KandN on right now with the smooth piece where the bellow used to be.
