Had my 2001 C5 for 5 months its got 98000 on it. It has a B&M short shift that was installed when i bought it. The other day as I was driving down the free way and went to shift into 5th, it went right past it and tried to drop into R. Thank God it ground and didn't just drop in! Any way it is now doing it every time I try to make the shift so I kind of have to feel for the gear or just skip it all together. Any clue whats going on? What can I do to fix it? is it in the tranny or on the shifter? Thanks!
There's supposed to be a lock out mechanism, which has obviously failed...and I don't think its the shifter. That's about as far as my knowledge goes on this...but I've seen posts like this before. Maybe do a search for "reverse lock out".
The lockouts seem to fail more on the c5 than the f-body.
You may want to rebuild the unit, If you have small hands you can reach up passenger side of the tranny and remove the one 13mm bolt, disconnect the harness and wiggle out of the tranny.
Pull the unit apart and clean with carb. cleaner then pack with grease. This should help you!
I had this issue with my stock shifter. I installed the B&M Ripper and have not missed it yet.
The one thing I've realized is that I was trying to baby it over to 5th, worried about hitting reverse. As soon as I started just pushing it over there hard and fast, never had a problem.
