I drained and re-filled my rear end fluid a few days ago. I was smelling gear oil, and sure enough, I lift up the car and it's leaking slightly from the drain plug.
I torqued the drain plug to 27 ft/lbs as specified. I re-torqued it again and we'll see if it leaks again.
I noticed the factory used some red "goo" on the threads of the plugs. Do you think that is why they did it? If so, where can I get the goo?
Re: Changed read end fluid - now it leaks! (SDVette)
A little bit of silicone sealer on the threads will keep the oil from wicking out. The red goo from the factory is basically the same stuff for exactly that reason . :yesnod:

The drain plug and fill plug on the rear diff has a thin washer...Make sure you didnt loose it...Never seen sealer on the diff plugs, only the M6 trans plugs

You're absolutely right. I was thinking of the transmission not the rear end.

Thanks for the input guys...
I did both fluids at the same time.. You're both right, the red goo is on the trans fill and drain plugs only.
I was careful to save and re-use both washers on the diff. I found it odd that on the diff fill plug, the washer was between the head of the bolt and the little "make sure you use limited-slip additive" tag. Is this correct? I would expect the washer to be against the differential itself
But I digress... that's not the one that's leaking. Hopefully the re-torque will stop the leak.
Right! Teflon tape, BUT don't over tighten (DON'T use factory torque spec with tape) since that stuff is slick. Simply tighten snuggly by hand. :yesnod:
Re: Changed read end fluid - now it leaks! (Avanti)
If I remember correctly, this is a face seal and the plug has straight threads so I wouldn't use teflon tape or silicone. I personally would clean everything off good and then re-check to make sure the leak is the plug (mine got on some of the suspension pieces when I drained it). As I remember, the washer is not really crushable so you have have some dirt under it or possibly it has a burr on it. Get a new washer and try that.

It goes head of bolt, tag, and then washer. The main reason I remember this is because I did not find the washer until I was trying to refill the diff. I had the plug and tag in my hand and then the washer came loose from the diff. itself.
Jeez is that fill plug a pain in the rear to get off and super hard to retorque. Just not alot of room back there. At least it was for me, those Rhino ramps need to be couple inches higher. :yesnod:
