Immediately after installing an aftermarket shifter, I started getting a grinding noise on hard shifts to 4th gear. The grind at shift stops after 5 minutes or so. It sounds like syncros to me, but at the shifter and not near the transmission. Anyone else ever experience this?
Thanks,
Mike :(
I had the similar problem, but mine was from 4th to 5th. The dealer change the 5th syncros and the 5th gear. After that I don't have the grind anymore. I hope that helps.
If it was shifting OK prior to the shifter change, then it is probably just in need of a linkage adjustment. there is a single rod that runs from the shifter back to the transmission.
Before tearing into the tranny, I'd try a linkage adjustment.
I'm with Mark. A linkage adjustment could be the fix. It's certainly worth a try.
Since it started after the shifter change stops after the tranny warms up I don't think it's the synchros. When I damaged my 4th gear synchros it would grind under any condition unless I double clutched. Here's the linkage adj. proceedure:
-Apply the parking brake.
-Remove the shift control closeout boot. Refer to Shift Control Closeout Boot Replacement .
-Place the shifter into NEUTRAL.
-Press down to engage the shift control neutral lock pin.
-Loosen the transmission shift rod clamp bolt.
-Loosen the shift control mounting bolts.
-Check that the shift control locator (on the underside of the shift control) is installed into the shifter bracket on the side of the driveline support assembly.
*Notice
Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
-Tighten the shift control mounting bolts. Tighten
-Tighten the shift control mounting bolts to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).
-Tighten the transmission shift rod clamp bolt. Tighten
-Tighten the transmission shift rod clamp bolt to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).
-Lift to release the shift control neutral lock pin.
-Install the shift control closeout boot. Refer to Shift Control Closeout Boot Replacement.
-Release the parking brake.
Thanks for all the replys,C5Cemo, I printed out your directions. I'm going to go that route -Thanks. rwj383, nice times and I might try some of your mods, but I don't believe I'll ever try to match your top speed mark. That's just flying low.
Mike
