2002 C5 Corvette Coupe
~75k miles
I've noticed recently the clutch wants to engage at the last few inches of pull as I release the clutch. I can't tell if I have a problem with my master cyl or the clutch itself. This is the first manual stick shift car I've owned. How can you tell when its time to replace it? The gears engage just fine. The car never pops out of gear or "slips". It just "BITES" at the last inch or so as I release the clutch.
I am aware of the issue where if I'm driving aggressively sometimes the clutch will drop to the floor--that gets fixed for a few months by replacing the oil. It's been about 6 months since I've changed it because I've been babying the car lately.
Does this mean its on its way out? How much (OUT THE DOOR, wipe your hands, job is done) does the average place charge to replace the clutch and flywheel?
$2k+ pretty easily. Clutches range in price but for good ones your looking at $1k or more. Then new hydraulics should be done(stock slave) is junk and will fail before long after a new clutch. Then you may as well do a master. Best option there is Tick and it's $350 or so. It's spendy on these damn cars to do a clutch. i did one on my Z28 for like $800. Wish it was that easy
It all depends on what clutch you go with. The labor that we charge to R&R a clutch is 695. The price changes from there depending on which clutch you go with. We really like the ACT clutches because they feel better than stock and hold big power; but they are a little on the pricey side. You may or may not need a new slave, depending on when you put the new clutch in if it fails or not. If it holds up during the bleeding process then it is fine. A new master is typically not required.

I spent about $700. in parts. When I did it I was quoted $450. labor by a smaller local shop. But I did it myself because I'm cheap and besides that life has taught me nobody can do a better job than myself. I must admit about 2 hours into it that $450. quote sounded a whole lot better.
Definitely not cheap unless you do it yourself. You can put in an LS7 clutch/flywheel for like $600 if you do it so not all clutches are that expensive. I'm putting in a McLeod RST twin disk starting this weekend (clutch hasn't been delivered yet) but I'm looking at about $1200 in parts including the clutch, flywheel, new slave, balancing, and remote speed-bleeder. If I didn't already have the Tick adjustable master cylinder then I'd be doing that now too for another $350.
