Default Horn Replacement

I found water in both horns (which may have caused my relay to blow).

This is the replacement procedure for the 2 horns (High and Low) located on the passenger side, in front of the front wheel.

The horn is located on the PASSENGER side. You need to come at the horn through the front fascia closeout panel.

Here is the replacement procedure from the book:

Document ID# 656925
2002 Chevrolet Corvette
________________________________________
Horn Replacement
Removal Procedure

1. Remove the right front fascia lower closeout panel. Refer to Close Out Panel - Front Bumper Fascia Lower in Bumpers.

2. Remove the horn assembly bolt.

3. Remove the horn assembly from the skid bar.

4. Disconnect the horn assembly electrical connector.

Installation Procedure

Bolt on new horns and reconnect electric connections.

NOTE,........see post ELEVEN for CORRECT HORN PLACEMENT, The horns mounted on my car were not correctly positioned for some reason.

Reassembly......

1. Position the horn assembly to the skid bar.
Install the aligning tab on the horn assembly into the hole on the skid bar.

2. Install the horn assembly bolt.

Tighten the bolt to 25 N•m (18 lb ft).
3. Connect the horn assembly electrical connector.
4. Install the right front fascia lower closeout panel. Refer to Close Out Panel - Front Bumper Fascia Lower in Bumpers.

If your horn does not work after this replacement check the horn relay

This relay is # 36 horn relay.

The NEW relay part number is

D1786C or 19116057

The original P/N is

Omron 12088567 (8567)

Also check horn pad function on the steering wheel (this pad also can fail and horn will not shut off, do a search)

Done.

If you troubleshoot the problem, you won't be replacing parts without a positive outcome. The horn switch(membrane), and relay should be verified FIRST, before replacing anything.

I did.......water in both horns. With everything else working perfectly, there would still be no sound, if the horns are inoperative. I like to start with the source.

first quick-check to try --- set the options on the D I C to have alarm = lights & horn..then lock the car to see if the horn blips ... if it does , its not the horns themselves....possibly steeering wheel pad or ground wire.

ZeroToSixty, maybe I'm just stupid and looking at the pictures wrong, but the horns are not supposed to get water in them. The old horns look like they were installed with the opening point UP. Looks like you installed the new ones the same way. If that's the case, how do you expect to keep water out of the new ones? If I'm looking at the pictures wrong, and you installed them with the opening pointing down, disregard this post, ok?

I thought about that too,...........but in the end decided to install them in a factory position. I assume GM engineers tested them in both positions and found less water enters in the stock posture.

If you are saying the final picture depicts the "stock posture"......that is not correct.

I see where the confusion may be. The first picture of the removed horn unit was inverted. Have a look at this.

This two pictures were included to depict the old units and the new units.

4. Disconnect the horn assembly electrical connector.

Installation Procedure

Bolt on new horns and reconnect electric connections.

I guess I'm easily confused, but it still does not look right to me.

Well I just assumed that the way they came off the car would be the factory position.

The horns are designed to get wet, the object of the mounting position is so water cannot stand.....which probably lead to the demise of the horns you removed.

Yes,....but I wonder why a car with 40k miles on it would have the horns on incorrectly......or could it be an assembly error.

No matter what the issue, your diagram clearly shows how they should be positioned.

Thanks to the various forum members who provided comments/corrections/peer review of this thread, their attention to detail will certainly save others some aggrevation in the quest to repair their nonfunctioning horns.

It certainly gives me confidence that more complex "How To" threads available on CF will tend to be accurate.
