Yep been asked a few times, I guess he does not want to answer the question.
I guess he does not want to answer. Maybe because it is a big secret, I do not want anybody to know. What the hell, I bought the car used I went back through the receipts I got with the car and it does not appear to be one bought. The one on it has no identifying numbers so I guess it may be stock. But do not tell anyone, remember I do not want anyone to know.
Are you running catless? We broke two chains before figuring out the cat was plugged up on my dad's Turbo Buick. Of course the car didn't run right either. Unlikely in your case given you are doing HPDEs. Any other possible restriction in the exhaust?

Whatever bro, you are the one breaking timing chains, not me. A few of us asked....why? , because there has been a known correlation with breaking timing chains, and certain balancers. You've got two very knowledgeable guys like Eric D and Vettenuts (both engineers, and a wealth of expertise) asking you for a reason.
You are far from the first person running that pulley to break a chain. It's happened to enough people that it really is getting to be beyond coincidence.
Good luck with your new engine, but I would not re-use that balancer, or you may find your chain troubles continue to follow.

Thanks for the info. The crate motor comes with a balancer so I am going to use it. The new engine comes with a warranty so I am not going to do many mods until the warranty runs out.

No disrespect intended . I was not trying to avoid the question but just no way for me to know who made the balancer and I was working on comparing pics and going through old receipts to find the answer when I caught your comment. So I guess I took it wrong. I have a new ls6 coming this Friday so I believe the problem maybe solved. I wish a thread like this was around the first time as I would have swithced balancers the first break.
I had an ASP pulley on both times when mine broke. I'll be glad to give it to anyone that wants to give it a shot.
When I spoke to my current engine builder about it he told me that they used to put them on the ASA motors that they built and subsequently started breaking chains. He said he has a pile of them now.

no dis.intended correct answer....guys help w/problems FREE all that is askedw/regards to problem should be answered as collectively this forum is a corncopiua of corvetteknowledge and as such others can benefit from your misfortune. Many ,myself included learned something I did /was not aware of, the cause of broken timing chains. Thanks for answering and explaining yourself as you didn't sound like a*** no ans. to balancer question left us hanging as we all wanted to know if balancer was the problem
Glad I bought the powerbond balancer. I remember reading on the Jeep forums that ASP was garbage when I was thinking of getting their balancer for my 4.7 V8 Jeep.
The solution to my chain problem arrived and we had our first test run yesterday. Hard to tell the diffrence between a heavly modded ls1 and a ls6. The ls6 is alot smoother without a race cam. I will get it on the dyno next week for a tune and we will see the numbers to compare.
They sell these motors and tell you all you have to change is the oil pan and pilot bearing but you do need a few more things off your old one. It took me about 2-3 hours just swapping peices.
