Default Cam for everyday driver

Im in the market for a new camshaft for my 98 coupe. I was thinking something mid-range. i want a choppier sound and a bit more torque would be nice. just threw on a pair of borla straight pipes so a cam would be the icing on the cake.

any suggestions?

I run a MS3 from Texas-Speed. For some its to much for a DD. Their Torquer v.2 is 232/234, .595"/.598 and the Torquer v.3 is 231/234, .643"/.598" Both are great cams for DD's

My cam is being installed this week after much research I had settled on the G5X1 however my tuner suggested the 224/228 AFR cam for a stock street 346ci setup. The tuner had an Engine Analyzer program that was instrumental in my cam selection. After analyzing numerous cams, I decided on a 224/230 609/612 114+2. This cam made the most power under the curve from 1500-6500rpm for my driving style. The G5X1 was lower on torque but peaked about the same. The difference was the lobe, which was a XFI lobe versus the XER/XE lobes. The 224/228 581/588 cam would have been my second choice. We also tried the G5X3, which pulled hard up top and peaked about 15hp higher but just gave up too much low-end torque for me. I pick up my car next week should be a screamer; fully ported 243’s, ported LS6 and TB, LG headers, under drive pulley, and full tune. The engine analyzer claimed 452rwhp and 408rwtq. They did the baseline dyno today and I was told it was very strong for a stock LS1 somewhere around 320rwhp with Vararam with powerduct and GHL bullets; I will have the actual baseline numbers tomorrow. Mine is a 6spd

I suggest something in the 220-230 range with a 115-118 LSA.

I went with EnglandGreen's Mayhem 2 cam. It is in the low 240s. It is perfect. They have one smaller called the Havoc cam but I dont know how torquey it is.

What are your goals for the car? I wouldn't run some of the cams the others have recommended if you're keeping stock gears and stock heads.

If using stock heads I would use either a 224/228, 224/230, or 228/228.

If using aftermrket heads and gears MS3, MS4, G5X3, whiplash, etc.

Even with the smaller cams, they all will lope enough for even normal people to notice. Do you plan on adding headers? If not you are VERY limited on which cam you can use.

The AFR LS1 cam (p/n 6016) is similar (but not identical) to the DTE custom grind cam that I have. I mention that because DTE does not sell the cam by itself (at least a few years ago).

The cam is very mild but the rwhp increased significantly and my gas mileage increased as well, even though I went to lower gears (3:15 to 3:42). Some of that is probably due to the tune (Phil does an awesome job), but seeing some of Tony Mamo's posts and knowing that it is similar I know rocks, I would have to believe that this cam would do the job for you.

Here's the dyno:

I also im looking at cams.
As mine is a DD kinda I would like a cam to come in around 2500 till 6500 since i rarely go redline. But would like a choppy idle. Iwill be upgradeing to a&a Sc kit in year or so. All these cam treads just make me wat to call and ask some1 arg to cams

I just installed a mild cam (and 243 heads) in my DD (2003 A4 Coupe). The cam specs were 224/230 .585/.595 113 LSA. Added good power across the board. More so in the mid to top end. I also wanted to hear the cam lope. With the 113 LSA it WILL shake the car at idle. Another member had an identical build to mine except the LSA was 114. His car is smooth at idle. I just wanted to point that out for those choosing a cam for a daily driver. Want to feel the shake, 113 LSA or lower, smooth LSA 114 or greater.

For my daily driver 1999 with LT headers, borla straight pipes, stock heads, and MN6. My tuner installed a mild cam, for the time which is about 6 years ago compared to what guys are installing now a days.

Cam specs are this: Comp Cam 220/220, .581/.581, 112LSA. This was what Comp recomended. My intentions were N/A, with good low end torque, not just peak HP at high RPMs. Rev limiter raised to 6200. Dyno numbers before headers were 348HP, 358TQ, with a slightly rich AFR around 11.0 I forget. Tuning from the cam install was not done on a dyno, just using LS1 edit and a safe very streetable tune. Lots of lope which I like. See sound clip below.

P.S. car ran 12.60's at the strip before headers, and on runflats with launching close or slightly above idle. I have never had any drivabilty problems with this cam. Now do I regret going with a slightly smaller cam than most.....maybe, but that's what heads are for.
